  • Eco-friendly Montenegro campsite with spectacular mountain views
  • Skadar Lake National Park half an hour’s drive; Podgorica 20 minutes
  • Well-kept grass pitches amid flower beds; farm-to-table restaurant
A mere 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Montenegro’s capital city of Podgorica, Oblun Eco Resort could almost be light years away. Set on a farm in untamed, leafy countryside with a spectacular backdrop of forested peaks, the campsite is a peaceful spot to base yourselves for expeditions into the limestone mountains or jaunts over the border into Albania (55 minutes’ drive). As its name suggests, the owners of Oblun Eco Resort are dedicated to preserving the environment, and have put eco-friendly practices in place. Facilities include an energy-efficient shower block and a farm-to-table dining concept at the on-site Odiva restaurant, where fresh, locally sourced and seasonal ingredients take centre stage. Here’s your chance to sample traditional Montenegrin dishes prepared with real love and care. The site itself has neatly kept, spacious grass pitches for tents, tourers and campervans (and wide, easily navigable tracks to all the pitches). Mature trees, newly planted saplings and well-tended flower beds abound about the grounds, and there are walking and cycling adventures to be had in woodland directly from the pitches.

Local attractions

First stop on a whistle-stop tour of this gorgeous corner of Montenegro might be Skadar Lake National Park (half an hour’s drive), where you can take out kayaks on the water, go hiking around the shoreline or visit wineries. To appreciate the drama of the landscape, navigate hairpin bends up to Pavlova Strana Viewpoint (20 minutes) for vistas over river meanders to tree-covered peaks. Spend family days out cuddling rescue donkeys at Donji Martinići (35 minutes), or visiting the deer at K9 Horse Riding and Wildlife Park (five minutes), where you can also trot through the countryside on well-behaved horses. If the kids are keen for days at the coast, head down to the lively pebble strand at Kamenovo (50 minutes) for escapades on pedal boats and games of beach volleyball. To get a feel for the laid-back city of Podgorica (20 minutes), join locals drinking coffee in Independence Square cafés. Have a wander around the historic Stara Varoš, a labyrinth of alleys dating back to Ottoman times and home to a couple of impressive mosques as well as a landmark church tower – one of the few buildings to survive World War II.
