  • An eco glamping experience in a treehouse in the Mexican jungle
  • Tulum within a 20-minute drive; Cancun airport is an hour 40 minutes
  • Fire rings, barbecues, shared kitchen and cooking/painting classes
Take time out jungle style when roaming Quintana Roo with an eco glamping experience in the middle of the rainforest; at Casa Aztlán, guests lodge in treehouses a 20-minute drive from Tulum. And despite the tourist town being so close by, the park has a back-to-nature feel… its eco-friendly cabins have no electricity (bring a power bank to top your phone battery up) but are covered in mosquito nets to ward off any pesky insects. Unwind in your comfy room or at the garden while mingling with others, then check out entertainment including cooking and painting classes. As well as keeping you busy, your hosts will feed you; breakfast is included and dinner is also available (book vegetarian and vegan options if you prefer). A dab hand at cooking outdoors? A fire ring and barbecue area are set up on site, as well as a kitchen so you can prep eats the traditional way. If you want your holiday to be about exploring as much as resting, Casa Aztlán is in a strategic location off the Yucatan Peninsula – a top spot in Mexico with plenty of sights to peruse. Guests will be a 20-minute drive from the Mayan architecture at Cobá (the highest of its kind) and about 25 to the well-situated Tulum ruins off the coast. After getting an intro to local history, learn more about the era and its people at Xcaret theme park an hour’s drive away, where the Mayan warrior displays, ball games and shows are representative of the culture. Exotic animals can also be seen here and an underground river in the grounds is just the place for taking a dip…

Local attractions

The Gran Cenote is 15 minutes from the park for swims in a stunning setting, while travellers can be interacting with the turtles at Akumal’s turtle bay within a 40-minute drive. The natural Xel-Ha Park about an hour away has a natural lazy river to float in and the bold blue water of the Sian Ka’an reserve takes about an hour and 45 minutes to reach if a longer day trip is what guests are after. Punta Laguna nature reserve, where you can spot spider monkeys, jaguars and pumas along with dozens of bird species, is a 40-minute drive and a Mayan village is close by too for a look at indigenous Mexican thatched roof houses. Prepared to journey further for city wanders? Cancún’s a couple of hours away and Valladolid takes an hour or so to reach.
