Perhaps you need somewhere handy to bed down for the night before/after a flight – or maybe you’re after a bargain base for exploring Cancún and the wider Quintana Roo area… either way, Nomad Sun Camping Plus makes an excellent option for open-air stays near the Caribbean coast. The folk that run this site have made real efforts to make this a friendly, safe and well-equipped place to stay, with a swimming pool on site and pitches set among the palm trees to provide plenty of shade for a cool night’s sleep. Digital nomads and those who need to deal with life admin can log on to the wifi, and there’s also a toilet/shower block, barbecue area and washing-up area to deal with further practicalities. This is a particularly handy spot for those coming straight from a flight (or bedding down shortly after arrival) as Cancún International Airport is a mere 15 minutes’ drive away. Once you’re settled, there are plenty of options for getting out to explore the area – the beaches of Cancún’s Hotel Zone are about 20 minutes’ drive away, and you can get to the gorgeous seaside ruins of Tulum in about an hour and a half. Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are all well within reach too.

Local attractions

Say the word ‘Caribbean’ and surely ‘beach’ isn’t far behind… You’ll have plenty of lovely options to choose from along this stretch of coast, with the nearest being Playa Delfines and Playa Tortugas in Cancún’s Hotel Zone (20 minutes’ drive). While you’re there, get some respite from the sunshine and learn a bit about the area’s past at Museo Maya de Cancún y Zona Arqueológica de San Miguelito, between the beaches. Further along the coast, you may like to spend a day in Playa del Carmen (50 minutes), take the ferry to Isla Mujeres (an hour) or make your way down to the spectacular seafront ruins at Tulum (an hour and a half). All three have some great snorkelling and scuba diving options (including trips to inland cenotes as well as Caribbean explorations), or you can organise underwater activities and boat trips in Cancún. Need something for the kids? Try a trip to Ventura Park (15 minutes), which has a waterpark and adventure activities like ziplines, or visit Croco Cun Zoo (25 minutes) for close encounters with exotic beasts (not just crocs but monkeys, snakes and parrots too).
