  • Surf school and tours available on site for beginners and pros
  • Pool, bar, restaurant and coworking space with meeting room
If you’re heading for Puerto Escondido on Mexico’s Oaxacan coast, chances are you’re no stranger to a surfboard. Or maybe you’d just really like to learn how to stay standing up on one for more than a few seconds. Well, stay at Selina Puerto Escondido right on the legendary Playa Zicatela and you’ll be in a sweet spot whether you’re a pro, a newbie or a chilled-out spectator. Life in this friendly bohemian party town is about as laid back as it comes. And that’s the vibe you’ll find when you step out of your cosy tepee for two too. Sunrise yoga sessions on the deck, Mexican breakfast in the restaurant, volleyball in the pool, all-day surf school on the beach or mezcal cocktails in the bar. Whatever’s top of your to-do list, we’ve got you covered on site. There’s even a comfy, well kitted-out coworking space with daily, weekly or monthly passes for those combining work and pleasure. Drop into reception for more info about the Selina Surf Club where you can sign up for one-to-one instruction or guided board tours and get tips on the best secret beaches to explore. Though the crashing waves of Playa Zicatela are mesmerising, if you can tear yourself away, you’ll find the calmer and more swimming friendly beaches of Carrizalillo and Puerto Angelito about a 10-minute drive away.

Local attractions

Surf’s up pretty much all day every day on Playa Zicatela. It’s home to the world-famous ‘Mexican Pipeline’ waves and can be unpredictable at the best of times, so signing up for lessons or heading out with a local guide is always advised. Setting the surfboard aside, there are loads more ways to immerse yourself in your stunning surroundings from snorkelling and scuba diving to dolphin and whale watching. If you’re staying at the right time of year – usually October to May – you can take part in the baby turtle release at Playa Bacocho (15 minutes by car). And after the sun goes down, light up the night with a bioluminescence tour at Lake Manialtepec (20 minutes’ drive). For nightlife of a different kind, head to La Punta (40 minutes’ walk/10 minutes’ drive) at the southern end of Playa Zicatela. Live music, sandy streets and delicious street food make this a mellow place to watch the glorious sunset.
