The rocking name is a good fit for lively Camping Led Zeppelin. At this site on the outskirts of Cupra Marittima, on the Riviera delle Palme (Palms’ Riviera), in Italy’s Marche region, families can spend an activity-filled holiday just a few minutes’ walk from the Adriatic Sea. The beach – just across a railway underpass – is well equipped with umbrellas and loungers for hire, though you can also choose to just unfurl your towel on the sand. Then you can relax while the kids splash around in the shallow waters (there is a lifeguard on duty) or, if you feel active, you can explore the coastline by paddleboard or canoe, or join a game on the beach volley court. On windy days, if the sea is rough, the outdoor pool on site (complete with children’s lagoon) is the place to be. Kids can make new friends by joining the organised activities, which are sensibly split into age groups, with educational workshops for younger children, and sporting tournaments for the Maxi (ages 9–12) and Junior clubs (ages 13–17). Water aerobics and dance classes ensure that the adults don’t feel left out. The entertainment programme continues in the evenings, with music, performances and more dancing. There is a well-stocked food market within the complex, as well as a restaurant serving local seafood and regional specialities. Other amenities include a toilet and shower block (with facilities for disabled guests), a washing-up area and a launderette, plus charging points for electric cars.

Local attractions

To appreciate the palm aspect of the Riviera delle Palme, spend a few hours in San Benedetto del Tronto (15 minutes’ drive), where tall trees provide shade along the beautifully landscaped seafront promenade. Take a stroll along the harbour area, dotted with artworks including the Monument to Jonathan Seagull, then stop for a seafood meal. Known for its travertine buildings, the medieval city of Ascoli Piceno (45 minutes) spreads out from Piazza del Popolo, a square flanked by elegant arcades, imposing palazzos and centuries-old churches. Renaissance art fills the corridors at the Civic Picture Gallery, and there is also an archaeological museum with locally excavated artefacts. At Parco Regionale Naturale del Conero (one hour), trails of varying degrees of difficulty weave across Mediterranean pine groves all the way down to the sea and beaches like Spiaggia Sassi Neri, a popular spot for snorkelling. For something more exclusive, check out the Beach of the Two Sisters, which can be accessed only from the sea (you can take a boat from Numana).
