  • Well-equipped site in a pine forest and next to its own private beach
  • 10 minutes' drive to Montalto di Castro; an hour and a half to Rome
  • Large water park, spa, restaurant and lots of summer activities
A quiet, centuries-old pine forest, a splendid sandy beach and the scent of… Roman holidays? Yes, this is precisely the strange but fab mix that’s on offer at Gitavillage California, based on the seafront 10 minutes’ drive from Montalto di Castro in the province of Viterbo. Such an excellent Maremma location does, however, bring up a dilemma from time to time… should you spend your day lounging on the beach (it is private, equipped and right next door, after all), exploring the scenic local area or soaking up all the history, art and culture of Rome (given that it’s easily reachable with a drive of about an hour and a half)? Or perhaps, stay at the site and take advantage of all the leisure facilities available? That would be tempting once you’ve set your eyes on the large water park (with slides, water games, hydromassage, a beach area and a sun terrace), the spa (with Turkish bath and more hydromassage), the tennis courts, the playground and the space for games of beach volleyball, football and basketball. That's not to mention the various organised activities, which range from pilates to aqua gym lessons. The sensible answer is, of course, to settle here for a lengthy stretch so you can cram it all in. And then you’ll also have time to take in all the entertainment (karaoke, board game nights, musicals at the amphitheatre…) and enjoy plenty of meals at the restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s also a well-stocked shop if you’d rather do your own catering (and you can find time…)

Local attractions

So, to Rome? A drive of around an hour and half will get you over to the Eternal City for strolls through its stunning streets, stopping to gawp at the Colosseum, St Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain and the Sistine Chapel along the way (and to scoff some gelato – all this being wowed is hot work…) If that seems a bit far-flung but you’d still like to get out and about, try something a bit more local like a visit to the ruins of Vulci (25 minutes’ drive), a colourful stroll through the Tarot Garden (20 minutes) or a bit of flamingo-spotting in the salt pans of Tarquinia Nature Reserve (35 minutes). Village-based wanders are often rewarding for a sense of the local area too: Montalto di Castro (10 minutes), Pitigliano (an hour) and Bagnoregio (an hour and 15 minutes) are some of the top picks.
