If you’re touring around Bavaria, you’ll need to give Naturzeltplatz Jägerfleck a go. This won’t be a tall order at all when you see the site pics and read the rave reviews from former guests: accolades heaped on this spectacular Freyung-Grafenau place include ‘just beautiful’, ‘perfect’ and – this is why you must book forthwith – ‘we stayed in over 40 campsites across France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Czech republic, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg…. and this is the best of them all.’ There are reasons aplenty why Naturzeltplatz Jägerfleck is so rightly hailed as such a splendid place to stay: its setting for starters, under 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Spiegelau just outside the stunning Bavarian Forest National Park… and on the edge of a thick lush forest with hiking trails aplenty all around. It’s set up for guests who want peace from noisy or busy sites, remaining traffic free at all times and not allowing large numbers at any one time. And the setting on site? Pitching is in a big and greenly scenic meadow, on a roomy setting with colourful fruit orchard, pretty garden and plenty of space in which to picnic and roam. Each spacious pitch is equipped with a picnic table, a barbecue and a water tap for drinking; a fireplace with grill and a drinking water outlet are available for communal use. Amenities include a bathroom with a shower, a bathtub and a toilet, all in the main building which also has a washing machine and a dryer. And finally? Friendly owner Annette ensures that all guests get a national park pass on arrival, for free travel on the trains and buses running across the park – you really need to give this site a go.

Local attractions

The site is in a wildlife haven and an excellent setting for activities and attractions. Highly recommended by the site team (and anyone with sense) are walking and cycling in the Bavarian Forest National Park: Germany’s first national park covers over 24,000 hectares and along with its neighbouring Czech Bohemian Forest the forest here makes up the biggest swathe of woodland in central Europe… so you may find a trail or two to suit… Also follow the trails around local town Spiegelau – look for the forest play area and the natural pool – then hike to the scenic setting of the gorge of Steinklamm, where roaring waters rush over stones. Three trails are accessible from May to October, including the hiking Wanderlinie Echtes Springkraut path, the circuit Steinforelle route and the smaller Ladybug trail. Spiegelau is famed too for its glass: the Kristallglasfabrik Spiegelau GmbH factory (which has been making the stuff since 1521) is five minutes’ drive from the site.
