  • Swimming pool and restaurant on site
Well, isn’t this a properly palatial Provence pad? If you’ve ever harboured dreams of spending your days sauntering around the grounds of your own stately home, Château de l’Eouvière could be the place for you. Once settled in at this elegant 18th-century castle, you’d be forgiven for wanting to spend days on end drifting around the estate, gazing out over the gorgeous views, batting a few table tennis balls around and hanging around the pool for swims and sunbathing (or an aqua gym class if you need a little more movement). And you’d be most welcome to do just that, should you wish (it’s your hols, after all). But it’s certainly worth venturing out into the scenic surrounds – a little or a lot, depending on your appetite for activity. This site 10 minutes’ stroll from Montmeyan is handily placed for swims from the sandy beach at Lac du Quinson, 10 minutes’ drive away, climbing and canoeing in the Verdon Gorge and walks or watersports in the Verdon Regional Natural Park. Roaming or loafing completed for the day, there’s a tasty menu of local dishes at the site’s restaurant, frequently accompanied by a bit of entertainment to get your evening going with a swing.

Local attractions

The gorgeous Verdon Gorge (aka Europe’s Grand Canyon) is an hour or so away by car, and well worth the trip to see the turquoise river flowing between the vast limestone cliffs. There are heaps of scenic spots to snap pics from, with canoeing, climbing and canyoning nearby for folks who seek a bit more adventure. More tiptop views are in the Verdon Regional Natural Park (15 minutes’ drive); take a walk on one of the trails, or head to Lac de Castillon or Lac de Sainte-Croix for beaches and watersports including windsurfing and sailing. To fuel up for all this fresh-air activity, angle for a day wandering around the pretty village of Aiguines (35 minutes’ drive). Take the trip on a Tuesday and, after a stroll around the 17th-century castle, pick up Provençal products including honey, truffles and lavender at the local market.
