  • Family-friendly Picardy campsite at Rue on the Baie de Somme
  • A 15-minute drive to Fort-Mahon-Plage; 40 minutes to Le Touquet
  • Swimming pools, games courts and fishing; entertainment in high season
There's a wonderfully chilled family vibe at Camping La Garenne de Moncourt, at Rue on Picardy’s sweeping Baie de Somme (a spot that's conveniently close to channel ports for visitors from the UK). Its neatly manicured pitches are also close to the beaches at Fort-Mahon and Quend as well as the pretty fishing village of Le Crotoy and medieval Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. Chances are, however, that you and the children might never make it as far as the beach – there’s just so much going on at the site itself. Younger kids can run off energy at the play areas, clamber onto inflatable giraffes and splash around safely in their paddling pool. This is part of an aquatic complex with indoor and outdoor pools, water slides and relaxing whirlpool baths to keep everybody happy and entertained. You can also play pétanque, ping pong and table football, have a race around with a ball on the multi-sports court, or go trout fishing on four well-stocked lakes (the biggest of these incurs a fee). There’s horse riding close by too, as well as lots of walks around the Baie de Somme if you’d rather stick to exploring on two legs. And that’s not all. Activities to keep young and old out of trouble are organised during high season: children’s clubs, pétanque competitions, Zumba classes, aqua-gym lessons, pool parties, dance evenings, karaoke sessions, themed meals… the list just goes on.

2 bedroom mobile home

Liked: We really enjoyed the caravan, was adequately sized with plenty of room for a family of 4, all amenities were close and caravan was well stocked and clean, rooms were bright and airy and nicely decorated.

Disliked: They said there was evening entertainment but there was none on the week we were there, which although they had the pools meant we had to go out and explore France (not a bad thing though as saw some wonderful places).

Local attractions

The lure of the Opal Coast beaches may be just enough to tempt families away from the fun and games on site. As well as the stretches of sand at Fort-Mahon-Plage, there are dunes ideal for playing hide-and-seek at Plage de Quend (both 15 minutes’ drive). Berck (20 minutes) has a lively prom with carousels and a big wheel, while Le Touquet-Paris-Plage (40 minutes) is as well-known for its nightlife as its glorious beaches. Active types can get out on sand yachts at Ozone, sail dinghies from Le Crotoy and play golf on undulating links courses (all 15 minutes). Kids with any energy left may like to completely wear themselves out on the treetop rope courses and bouncing nets at Happy Park Crécy (20 minutes). Nature lovers often spot seals basking on the Baie d’Authie (25 minutes), while at Park Marquenterre (15 minutes) you might get to see herds of wild ponies grazing, as well as stately swans and migrating wading birds in the lagoons.
