  • Accommodation at a renovated château in the Tarn region, Midi-Pyrénées
  • Cordes-sur-Ciel 10 minutes’ drive; UNESCO-listed Albi half an hour
  • Evening meals available; swimming pool; forest and vineyard views
If you’re considering a sojourn in the Midi-Pyrénées, what’s not to like about staying at La Tourette, an immaculately renovated château and former winery with a watchtower dating from Ancient Roman times? Surrounded by forest and vineyards, the château is five minutes’ walk from the tiny rural village of Amarens in the Tarn. Whether you spend time sightseeing in medieval villages like hilltop Cordes-sur-Ciel (10 minutes’ drive) or cycling the near-deserted local lanes, you can cool off with a refreshing dip in the outdoor pool. If cooking is off the agenda for your holidays, spoil yourselves with gourmet meals prepared on site using regional produce – just please remember to order them in advance. Along with vivid sunsets, you’ll find peace and quiet in abundance at this elegant hideaway, yet it’s easy to connect back to modern life, thanks to the network of D roads that wend their way through the Tarn region.

Local attractions

When staying at La Tourette, the Bastide villages of south-west France are yours to explore. Have a wander past Gothic mansions in the medieval streets of Cordes-sur-Ciel (10 minutes’ drive), pick up sweet treats from the Museum of Sugar and Chocolate Arts and potter around water gardens at the exotic Jardin des Paradis. Taste full-bodied Gaillac wines at local vineyards (there are several within 20 minutes’ drive), or head into Gaillac town itself (25 minutes) for more tastings at the celebrated Maison des Vins de Gaillac. You’ll find it in the grounds of the pink-stone Benedictine Abbaye Saint Michel, overlooking the River Tarn, and well-worth looking inside. The lovely UNESCO-listed city of Albi (half an hour) deserves your attention too; make your first stop the Pont Vieux observation point for views over ancient rooftops to the vast 13th-century cathedral, then have a wander past half-timbered houses in the historic Castelnau district.
