  • Peaceful countryside stays away from busy tourist resorts
  • An hour from Toulouse and close to foie gras and other foodie farms
  • Pool, fishing pond, sauna, restaurant and immaculate amenities
What a gorgeous – and blessedly peaceful – Midi-Pyrénées site this is. Sparklingly clean and mighty friendly, Camping Le Néri is in the greenly handsome countryside of the Gascogne region, deep in the department of Gers. It's only an hour from Toulouse, but Camping Le Néri is well away from busy tourist resorts: settle down here for serene French stays close to Armagnac vineyards, farms selling foie gras, and long lengths of countryside walking and biking trails. Among the modern facilities at this amicable site are a generously sized pool, a playground, mini golf, and a pétanque court where regular tournaments are held. There's also a fishing pond for contemplative afternoons, and a sauna – oui, this is a most relaxed and peaceful place. Food is also well sorted, with the many tasty dishes of Gascony cuisine served at the restaurant along with takeaways and snacks. Bread and pastries can be ordered on site to be delivered freshly baked each morning; there are communal barbecues and a food shop too for sorting your own meals. Camping Le Néri also has wifi, a washing-up area, a launderette and – le grand bonus – what a grateful former guest has called 'the cleanest toilet and shower block I've ever seen'.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Friendly team, lovely location and pitches. The swimming pool was excellent - a great size and it wasn’t bogged down by rules (and everyone still used it responsibly!). The toilet/shower block was clearly new and it was excellent.

Disliked: Only slight complaint is that we went to buy ice creams one afternoon and, despite ringing the bell a couple of times, no one came to serve us so we left without ice cream and the campsite lost a very small bit on income.

Local attractions

Foodies: sorted. The area around Camping Le Néri is filled with culinary tradition, from the vineyards of Armagnac and the white wines of the Côtes de Gascogne to the Honey Museum in Gramont and the many local farms to visit such as La Ferme Jeanfrance in Mauroux: zip around the countryside here to buy the freshest of fresh foie gras, magrets, confits, cou farci… More of an active sort? There are walking and cycling trails accessible near the site and two golf courses in Auch and in Fleurance. Saint-Clar has a large leisure centre and paintball is available in Caudecoste. If you're up for even more relaxing, the nearby thermal centres of Castera Verduzan and Lectoure both have plenty of spa treatments to sink into; for a more hectic day if you're here with the kids, visit the animal park in Saint-Clar, home to 150 animals from Australia including wallabies, emus and alpacas: strewth.
