  • Secluded site on terraces of an old hillside estate in the Cévennes
  • On-site waterpark with flumes, slides, pools; restaurant and bar
  • 30 minutes to gorges, ravines and Templar castles; 45 to Roquefort
Something about this site feels like a hidden secret… surrounded by the hills of the Cévennes, you don’t expect the historic stone buildings and the terraced plains to be part of a holiday park. And that’s precisely the intention: Val de Cantobre lays on comfort, convenience and activities while pointing you towards the wild landscape all around. When you’re ready, that is. The kids generally peg it down to the waterpark before they’ve unpacked – and with three pools, three waterslides and a flume, there’s plenty for everyone. (And once you’re practised at hurtling through foaming water at high speed, you can try it down on the river nearby.) Activities are laid on for kids in the summer, or they can entertain themselves in the playground and games room. Miniature golf and boules are also on site. The sun should dry everything out but it’s handy to have a launderette on site too. At sunset, step out in your freshly laundered finery and eat at the restaurant, or take in the views at the bar. There's a shop on site but you can also pick up groceries and delicacies in nearby Nant, five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

If some parts of France are dramatic, the Aveyron is epic. A drive to Les Gorges de la Dourbie (20 minutes) makes a handy introduction; you feel as if you should see knights on horseback cantering through this landscape of plunging ravines, clear rivers and impossible bridges. Equally precarious villages cling to the cliffs; Le Couvertoirade (30 minutes) is a walled town in the skies built by the Knights Templar in the 14th century. In the busy town of Millau (30 minutes) you can hire kayaks and mountain bikes, while the go-karts and quad bikes in the Parc de Loisirs des Bouscaillous make a tempting way to combine a town trip with some excitement. As the site's on the edge of the Parc National des Cévennes, you won’t be short of trails to walk and hike, especially around the Dourbies area. An hour’s drive gets you to Mount Aigoual; the highest peak in the Cevennes and home to a weather station where visitors are welcome. Take the ‘steps’ challenge, ascending 1,200 metres in 4000 steps, or go by several gentler routes via views stretching to the ocean. You won't want to leave, but before you do, visit Roquefort (45 minutes): to see the caves – and eat the cheese.
