  • Quiet family campsite with grass pitches by the Tarn River in Aveyron
  • Half an hour's drive to Millau Viaduct, and 35 minutes to Peyre
  • Swimming pool, saunas and tennis courts; restaurant, bar and shop
Set deep in the Tarn Gorge in south-west France’s stunning forested Aveyron, Camping Les Prades is a convivial spot for anyone and everyone looking for rural peace and quiet – plus lots of outdoor activities to get them out and about exploring the region. But you don’t even have to leave the site to get active; simply head for the swimming complex, with its mountain views, heated outdoor pool, water slide, paddling pool for toddlers and daily fitness classes. Adults have extra relaxation in the form of free access to the Jacuzzi and saunas, before challenging friends and family to games of tennis, pétanque, archery, volleyball… the list goes on. From your spacious grass pitch – shaded from the sun by mature trees – make the most of the spectacular scenery as you try a multitude of outdoor activities: the site’s welcoming staff members can organise walking tours, mountain biking and kayaking on the River Tarn, as well as fishing, horse riding and rock climbing. On a practical level, the site has lots of thoughtful conveniences too, from unlimited hot water in the shower blocks to baby baths and changing tables. If you run low on provisions, you can pick them up at the supermarket in high season, while at other times essentials like bread and pastries can be acquired at reception. A terrace bar and restaurant takes care of the times when you just don’t feel like cooking.

Liked: The pitches were spacious and level, with amenities like water and electricity close by. Trees provide good shade too. The site as a whole is well run, with friendly staff and well maintained toilets and showers. The pool was great but it was also great to have the river as an option (especially when the pool gets busy later on). The food in the restaurant was good and the terrace was a nice place to enjoy an afternoon drink and ice cream. The shop is pricey but they always have bread and crosisanys in the morning which are delicious. Overall, the site had a really relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and we had a great time. Will definitely be back.

Local attractions

If you didn’t drive across the Millau Viaduct (half an hour’s drive) to get to Camping Les Prades, it’s surely worth a trip to see its famed spans soaring above the Tarn Gorge on spindly supports. Designed by UK architect Lord Norman Foster in 2004, the bridge sits close to Peyre (35 minutes), one of France’s cutest villages and well worth a visit for its mellow-stone riverside houses straggling up cliffs. As well as sporty pastimes, the rocky Tarn Gorge is known for its spectacular winding drive, leading to medieval towns like Roquefort (stop off to buy some of its famed blue cheese). Visit pretty waterside Sainte-Enimie (both 50 minutes) to see ancient houses clinging to the river banks, or take a boat cruise down the Tarn from La Malène (40 minutes). With many pretty villages and landmark castles like Château de Mélac (40 minutes), the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park (35 minutes) is an area of dramatic limestone plateaux and deep gorges, with hiking and cycling routes for all levels of ability.
