  • Mountain biking, climbing, canyoning and rafting at the Gorges du Tarn
  • Outdoor pool, playground, tennis, badminton, volleyball and pétanque
Ladies and gentlemen, behold… the world’s tallest bridge. Park yourselves at Camping Saint-Martin in the hills above the village of Creissels, and it’ll take you less than an hour to hike to the famed Millau Viaduct, spanning the spectacular gorges of the Tarn valley below. Bridge viewed? There’s heaps of tiptop stuff around here to detain you for several days, particularly if you’re the kind that thrives on fresh-air challenges. You may have already deduced from the need for an enormous bridge that this is some pretty dramatic craggy, cliff and river-based landscape, lending itself superbly to canoeing, kayaking, caving, climbing, mountain biking, paragliding and the like. You’ll not even need to roam too far to organise your adventures – just have a chat with the folk on site and they’ll help hook you up with the relevant crews. Back at base, bring your pulse back to its normal resting rate with games of pétanque or table tennis or a restorative swim in the open-air pool. Or keep the energy up if you prefer (here’s looking at you, kids) with games of football, volleyball, tennis or badminton on the site’s courts, or scrambling through the wooden play equipment at the playground. It’s highly possible too you’ll lose your teens for a while to the attractions of the games room – a handy escape bunker for them should you decide to strut your stuff at one of the disco nights. A snack bar selling cool drinks and ice cream is open in high season. A supermarket is five minutes’ drive away and restaurants are in the village (within a five-minute drive or a half-hour rural and riverside ramble).

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The staff are amazing. So friendly and helpful. Loved the croissants and bread! Helped us with an app for a hike above the site which was a lovely walk to view Le Viaduc de Millau. Pitches are lovely and level in amongst the trees. Really well kept site. Thanks for a great couple of days

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Very friendly welcome, the lady spoke good English. She kindly re-froze our cool blocks, too. Unfortunately the shop & cafe weren’t open.

Disliked: Some very mature trees with low branches, making it difficult to park the van. Toilets very basic, no toilet paper supplied.

Local attractions

It’s not all about the bridge in Millau… head to the Place du Maréchal-Foch to see the preserved medieval arcades, and wander on to the 12th-century Belfry of Millau. Another fab medieval site nearby is the Château Peyrelade, half an hour away by car – the ruined castle sits on a cliffside high above the valley with fab views towards the Gorges du Tarn. Once you’ve caught sight of the Gorges du Tarn, it’s most likely you’ll want to be getting right on in there. It’ll take you 40 minutes or so to drive over there to take your pick from the adventures available: canoeing, whitewater rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, hiking and climbing (either freestyle or on via ferrata climbing routes). If your idea of fun is flinging yourself off a mountain, that can be arranged not far from home, with paragliding and hang gliding trips taking you flying up into the air over the Grands Causses Natural Regional Park from Millau.
