  • Peaceful site with access to Espalion via a 1.5km riverside walk
  • Surrounded by 700km of GR hikes and 7,000km of fishing rivers
  • Huge and varied range of outdoor activities arranged on site
Pitch up here if you're after a lot of relaxing, a good bit of green space, well-equipped lodgings and a pleasantly friendly and familial vibe, plus all (yes, all) the outdoorsy activities you've probably ever dreamed of and more, organised right from the site. Set across six hectares in the historic village of Espalion in North Aveyron, Aux Portes des Monts d’Aubrac is surrounded by countryside and well placed for active pursuits around the region's handily varied landscape, from hiking more than 700 kilometres' worth of GR trails to climbing, horse riding, potholing, canyoning, archery, fishing, canoeing and skiing. (And that's not even half the activities a stay at this site gives you access to.) The library full of books and rentable board games has your quiet downtime covered, while the pool and football tables, football, basketball and volleyball courts and seasonal pool and kids' pool are at your disposal for more active times. During July and August a baker delivers fresh bread every morning, and when it comes to more substantial meals you can either cook up on the barbecue or head into Espalion via a pretty riverside walk along part of the iconic Santiago de Compostela hiking trail. Should you wish to wash your smalls (or bigs) once in a while, laundry facilities are available on request, and guests can hire sheets upon arrival if they'd rather save valuable luggage space for something more exciting.

Local attractions

This is a prime spot for those who enjoy a bit – or an awful lot – of outdoor activity. Aux Portes partners with a company that organises all the outdoorsy-type stuff you could hope to do, and it provides guidance for all levels of experience and ability under the supervision of qualified instructors. The area is networked by more than 700 kilometres of waymarked hiking trails, so best pack some sturdy footwear, and if you're a snowsports aficionado then you'll be chuffed to learn that the area has 200 kilometres of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Clamber around the area's rock formations with climbing, potholing and canyoning excursions, or tour the Lot valley in a canoe or a kayak; test your resolve in the trees with a high ropes course, tour the land on a road bike, or tackle rockier terrain on a mountain bike. Just talk to the friendly team about what you're thinking of and they'll happily help you out. For a little rest from such active antics, the area has more than 7,000 kilometres' worth of rivers and 38 lakes to fish in and the medieval Château de Calmont d'Olt is less than 10 minutes' drive away for tours, family-friendly challenges, archery demos and an excellent range of activities where your budding knights can check out the costumes and have a go at some of the relevant skills (slingshots and the like).
