If you love a seaside dip on holiday, you’ll feel right at home at Camping Bois de Valmarie. As it's a handy 300 metres from a sandy beach, you can decide on a dip one moment… and then plunge into the Mediterranean just a few minutes later. This hillside site in Argelès sur Mer, with sea views over Le Racou beach and three kilometres from the resort’s centre, is an advantageous base for all things seaside – including swimming, fishing, windsurfing, or taking a pedalo out to sea. While the beach is an adventure ground in its own right, there’s plenty of space for kids and families to have fun on site too. The central attraction is the tropical pool and its tumbling slides, where adults can bubble up in the hot tub or chill out on the sun loungers in between time spent playing miniature golf or making use of the site’s various games (table tennis, pool, table football and arcade games). Other facilities on site include a gym, giant trampoline, slides and a zipline, as well as evening entertainment in the summer months. It's enough to work up an appetite, but you need not worry about going hungry, as the on-site bar and restaurant, snack bar, food shop and bakery cater should keep bellies happily filled. Or if a beach-side sunset dinner sounds more like your kind of thing, you can watch the sun kiss the sea at several beachfront restaurants and bars a five-minute walk away.

Sapphire 2 bedroom mobile home

Liked: The welcome and ongoing support from our lifestyle reps Lisa and Shaun. The layout of and sea views from the site The unit which was clean and uncluttered and reasonably well equipped for our needs and was ample for two people and possibly two small children (but not 6 as indicated) We were two adults. The pool area was clean and well managed and all the rules that could impact health or hygiene were applied diligently even when some people clearly thought the rules only applied to others. The pool snack bar was well stocked, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was great. The site was well maintained and all safety features were in place and seemed to be adequate. The site applied the French restrictions on drought matters which is crucial in the region. The atmosphere in the site restaurant The site shop was well stocked but fairly reasonably priced for the convenience.

Disliked: The restaurant attached to the site was overpriced for the standard of food they serve. The units were very close together so a good nights sleep was hard to come by. Our unit was close to a noisy local (not site road) which seemed to be used at night by motorcyclists as a "race track". The bedrooms were very narrow and we had a few bruised toes from the bed legs. Except for the restaurant prices we accept there is little you could do as caravans transfer normal sounds and the road noise is a local government issue. The size of the rooms are what they are.

Local attractions

Make the most of that Mediterranean setting by taking a boat trip or renting a sea kayak from Argelès Port (20 minutes’ walk). In this area, you can also master the art of navigation among the cascades and crevices of the Canyoning Park (10 minutes’ drive) or gear up for something a little more spin-crazy with a round of go-karting next door at Ludi Kart (10 minutes) or the tosses and turns of the rides at Luna Park (10 minutes). If all the activities have left you feeling a little lightheaded, a gentler form of fun can be found in the tanks of Oniria Aquarium (30 minutes). The fish theme continues into the arty fishing village of Collioure (10 minutes), once home to the French painter Matisse – and surely the inspiration for many of his strokes. Further afield, gastronomy and wine-lovers will want to make a day of Perpignan (20 minutes), where you can munch on crispy fried pancakes as you walk past small turrets and wrought-iron bell towers. In the opposite direction and just over the border, Figueres (50 minutes) is the home of the Dalí Theatre-Museum, a place packed with surreal sights.
