FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked: Privacy The area is beautiful Lovely town with bar/restaurants

Disliked: Bit damp when we visited and got bitten by midges, but no fault of campsite as it is in a forest. Suggest take repellent if staying here.

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked: Location to village

Disliked: No respect shown about being quiet after 11pm. Was kept awake until 3am as campers were noisy and talking and laughing (drunk) very loud.

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked: Friendly welcome by owners, helped that they both spoke English. All facilities spotless. Pitches generously sized and all hedge lined. Swimming pool, cafe and bar but we didn’t use so can’t comment. Aldi 5mins drive away. 10min walk into lovely village, monastary ruin (entry fee). Some lovely looking restaurants too. Small supermarket within walking distance too but we only saw that on leaving.

Local attractions

Local town Jumièges is most famed for its abbey, hailed by Mr Victor Hugo as 'the most beautiful ruins in France' (nothing miserable about his trip there, then). An abbey of some sort has stood here since the seventh century, in a pretty parkland setting above the Seine; in a later incarnation, the abbey was consecrated in the presence of William the Conqueror. Heading towards the Normandy coast (you really should), about an hour and a half will take you to Cabourg, on the Côte Fleurie and the coast of the English Channel. This swish town has been a popular Normandy seaside resort since the middle of the 19th century (and also has a writerly connection, as the oft-incomprehensible Marcel Proust was a fan of the sands here). Cabourg is famed these days for its art galleries and racecourse, casino and annual Romantic Film Festival: do go see. The handsome harbour town of Honfleur, with port painted by Monet, Courbet and others, is just over an hour away: do go see that aussi.
