  • Family-friendly site with a lake surrounded by trees
  • A 20-min walk to Barra do Chuí beach, 20 mins' drive to Uruguay border
  • Barbecues, shop, volleyball, soccer field and watersports arranged
If your Portuguese is any good (or indeed, if you're Portuguese...), you’ll rightly come to the conclusion that Del Lago Camping is on a lake. But what its self-explanatory name doesn’t give away is just how lush the setting of this Alvorada park really is, sandwiched among a peaceful green pine forest with animals grazing in the grounds and plenty of seating areas for spreading out beside the water. As well as scenic surrounds, the site is well positioned for taking in memorable sunsets over its Rio Grande do Sul location, and has a family-like atmosphere with a focus on doing not much else but chilling and exploring the nearby rural lands. Can’t keep still? For active types a volleyball court and soccer field are on hand as well as games for the kids, and those who like to seek thrills might be pleased to know that watersports are organised here (just ask staff for details). For explores on horseback riding’s also available, and guests wanting to make a beeline to the beach for sandy sunbathing sessions will have access to one of Brazil’s big stretches of shoreline via a peaceful and private walking path taking around 20 minutes on foot. Other amenities back on base include wifi, drinking water and 24-hour access to hot showers. Barbecues are allowed if grilling up grub to rival the best Brazilian barbecue party sounds tiptop; a supermarket is less than a 10-minute drive away in the nearest town, Barra do Chuí. A small shop selling basic bits and bobs is also at the park if you’re not wanting to go far for fodder.

Local attractions

When guests aren’t sticking to the site for rests on a picnic blanket in the grassy green areas, Barra do Chuí beach is where they can hang out on golden sand with dips in clear Atlantic Ocean water to be had. Further along the coast at 30 minutes’ drive is Praia do Hermenegildo beach if a change of scene is sought... or you can seek a sunset at the port of Santa Vitória do Palmar a 40-minute drive away. If you’re after a major change of scene – perhaps to a completely different country? – drive south 20 minutes to the Uruguayan border then 25 minutes further for wanders in a lagoon landscape with hummingbirds to keep an eye out at San Miguel National Park. For more time in this small nation, the capital Montevideo is four hours and 15 minutes from the park; if you’re meant to be moving on to pastures new in Brazil, the fab beaches of Florianópolis are 12 hours north.
