Tranquil Waters Campground – the name does a fair bit of the heavy lifting in terms of explaining what awaits at this 80-acre semi-rural site on a farm a 20-minute drive from Yarra Junction, west of Melbourne. This family-friendly property includes a placid spring-fed reservoir populated with golden perch – a big tick for the anglers in your midst. Meanwhile, wildlife enthusiasts might spot local beasties as they come for a drink. The peaceful vibe extends beyond the waters to encompass the entire site: you’re in the middle of a vast area of bushland here, so there will be no noises from passing traffic – just birdsong and the rustling of the leaves on the trees. Bliss. After setting up camp on a grass or earth pitch, take your canine companion (for which there is a small extra fee) for a wander around the tree-shaded grounds, or head to the firepit area to meet fellow residents. There’s a composting toilet (lime is provided), but that’s pretty much it in terms of amenities, since there is no hot or drinkable water. Come prepared by stocking up on bottled water and other necessities in Gembrook (15 minutes’ drive) or Yarra Junction. If it’s not water but wine you’re after, you’re in luck, for the site is within a half-hour drive of the Yarra Valley and its wineries, most of which arrange tastings and have cellar door shops. And of course, there’s epic hiking, in both Kurth Kiln Regional Park (half an hour) and Bunyip State Park (40 minutes).

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Didn't stay, contacted owner with reason. Was exhausted by drive in, dangerous for person nearly seventy towing a caravan. Not comfortable so left, very unnerving driving on the track.

Disliked: See above.

Local attractions

Prepare for the kids to squeal with delight (and you can squeal, too) as they stroll through the Koala Forest section at Healesville Sanctuary (40 minutes’ drive). Other residents at this animal park include platypus, dingoes and kangaroos, plus colourful parrots and reptiles. The striking architecture of the building alone warrants a visit to TarraWarra Museum of Art (45 minutes). Add the varied collection of contemporary Australian art and a spectacular location, overlooking the green, vineyard-covered hills of the Yarra Valley, and you can easily spend the best part of a day here. Book a ride on the Puffing Billy Railway (50 minutes), a steam train that has been winding its way through the lush ferns of the Dandenong Ranges for more than 100 years. For the best views (and most thrilling experience), you’ll have to sit on the sill of the carriage with your legs hanging out.
