  • Spacious eco and bush camping on a private cattle farm
  • Tipplers' paradise: more than a dozen wineries within half an hour
  • Top spot for stargazing, far from city lights
Craving a holiday far from the madding crowd? At Camp at Old Bara, a family-friendly site on a working cattle farm just over half an hour’s drive from the town of Mudgee in Central West, New South Wales, the Nagel family owners say that’s just what you’ll get: a ‘true Aussie’ break in the bush. If your boots are made for walking, then here’s just where to come. Without ever leaving the farm’s 1,100 acres, you can trip along loads of bushwalking tracks or don your helmet and have a two-wheeled go – keep lively eyes out for local wildlife and listen to try and identify the bird calls swooping around above you. That’s not the only way to stay active at Old Bara, so head to the creek to catch some yabbies (a type of crayfish), go for a swim or take the kayak out for a serene afternoon on the water. When you’re ready for some munch, gather some firewood and get the campfire and barbie started; if you’re in luck, the Nagels will have barbecue packs ready to buy, otherwise head into Mudgee to grab supplies at the supermarket. There are also plenty of restaurants you could try within 50 minutes if you want to venture off site. Once you’ve eaten your fill, kick back next to your campfire and turn your eyes to the skies – the site is far from any light pollution, so an evening (or two, or three) of stargazing is a must.

Local attractions

Clink those glasses in celebration and raise a toast to Mudgee: you’re in wine country now. There are more than a dozen wineries within 35 minutes’ drive of Old Bara, so butter your designated driver up by telling them most serve food as well as booze, and keep things zesty with the promise that you’ll stop at the di Lusso estate long enough for a game of bocce. For the non-wine drinkers, you don’t have to pass your hols completely on the dry (unless you want to): head to Baker Williams Distillery for tastes of gin, limoncello, schnapps and liqueurs. Give your liver a rest with a poke around Mudgee: dig into the past at the Colonial Inn museum, fulfil your cultural needs on the Mudgee Sculpture Walk or take a ride on the miniature railway. Want to get back out into the bush? Munghorn Gap and Avisford nature reserves are within 45 minutes of the site. If the kids are starting to tire of Mudgee, pile into the car for a jaunt to Dubbo (two hours), where you can visit the observatory, stroll around the botanic gardens or meet the animals at Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
