  • Vale of Clwyd site a mile from Ruthin town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from Snowdonia and 40 minutes from the coast
  • Views of the Clwydian Range: Moel Famau within walking distance
Even a quick look at the pics gives away that Coed Derw Camping has some cracking views out over the Clwydian Range… and that in turn should give you a hint that this Denbighshire site, within the grounds of the Vale Country Club, is a fine spot for a walking holiday. It’s a particularly fine spot if you’re in the area to climb Moel Famau, the region’s highest peak. This popular hiking area is within walking distance of the park so you can tackle it without any need to consider car parking – always something of a bonus. Your boots won’t be done once you’re back down from there: have a chat with the folk on site for ideas on where else to walk locally or take a drive to the Snowdonia National Park (about half an hour away). While you’re over in Snowdonia, you might like to tackle mountain bike trails, inland surfing or zipwires too; if that all sounds a bit much, head north to the seaside with a drive of 40 minutes or so. Got any more walking in your legs? It’s handy to know you can walk to the town of Ruthin in about 20 minutes (along a road that’s got pavement all the way) – although you could also drive in five minutes if you’re out of puff. Either way, there are plenty of places to eat and drink over there, plus takeaways and shops to pick up supplies for a barbecue back at base. Back at base, facilities include toilets, showers and free wifi.

Liked: The area was nice & had lovely views and the camp site was really clean.

Disliked: Firstly I want to say we are more dog lovers than humans, this is nothing to do with dogs. But my dislike is the owners dogs running from pitch to pitch and running into peoples tents, we paid good money to allow my dog to feel relaxed and these two dogs running around ruined that, they was literally sitting by a man with his children looking for food and would not leave him until he had to put his food away, I understand this is your land but we pay good money for the relaxing stay, it wasn’t cheap it was £81 for 2 nights for a electric pitch! You had a perfectly large area at the back on the pitches your dogs could run around, also they was doing their business on the grass where kids was playing and nobody picked it up. This 100% put me off this site. I called up and mentioned dogs are running around but was told they are my dogs and they have been cooked up all day so you letting them stretch there legs, that’s all great but you need to be with your dogs, they was out of control just running around, you don’t know other dog backgrounds, other dogs may have had a bad experience with other dogs and it puts them on edge all holiday. Also they left a mess outside our tent, this left people thinking this was our dog, we had people saying there is dog *** here and we had to say this was not our dog, we wouldn’t dream of leaving it. Anyway everything was great until this. Also the WI-FI just did not work!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely facilities very clean and warm, nicely kept spacious pitches. I have a large air tent and it was perfect. The owner is very friendly and has 2 lovely dogs that wonder the site however they are friendly and no bother. Lovely views and we managed to see the northern lights the first night we stayed. It is close to the road but this didn’t bother us.

Local attractions

Best way to get out for a walk? Head straight out from the site for the likes of Ruthin Gaol (half an hour on foot) or Moel Famau (an hour and 15 minutes). Once you’ve wandered locally there are heaps more fab routes in the Snowdonia National Park (half an hour’s drive) or out on the Denbighshire moors, where Llyn Brenig (half an hour) is a top spot for waterside walks, plus sailing and fishing. If you’ve got a bit of an adventurous streak, there are plenty of places to unleash that around here. If it’s moving at speed that gets your heart going, try out the mountain bike trails at One Planet Adventure (20 minutes), or scream along the ziplines at Zip World Fforest (45 minutes). For water-based antics, ride the surf waves at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (half an hour), or something subterranean, bounce on the underground trampolines at Zip World Slate Caverns (an hour). Time for a breather? Rhyl (40 minutes) is a fine choice for a day at the seaside, playing on the beach, riding the miniature railway and eyeballing the sea beasties at the aquarium.
