Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (no pets)

Liked: A lovely quiet site with large pitches giving plenty of space between campers. First time we had tried a composting toilet and it was OK. Loved taking a shower with the swallows nesting in the corner of my shower cubicle. Good to have a leave time of 12 noon so no rushing on the last day. Plenty of bird life to watch at dusk.

Disliked: Only being in the shade in the morning but we parked close to the hedge so partly our fault.

Primitive grass campsite (no pets)

Liked: Lovely facilities, two hot showers with swallows nesting which was certainly a unique experience! Clean compost loos. Generous pitch sizes. Very helpful owner who advised us on where best to pitch after some heavy rainfall leaving the ground quite soggy. Hot water washing up area and a hand washing station. I loved the cold wash room which is great for getting ready for bed of an evening, I always find it gross when people use the washing up facilities for this so I thought this was a great idea which I had not seen before!

Disliked: Midges! Don't forget your bug spray!

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: I loved the tranquility of the pitch and the facilities were clean and tidy throughout my stay. It was my first experience of a compost loo but I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the cubicles each day. I liked the separate cold washroom and the washing up area and showers too.

Disliked: There wasnt anything I disliked at all

Local attractions

Built in the 1700s, Stourhead (10 minutes’ drive) is a National Trust-run house renowned for its Palladian-style architecture (with its exquisitely symmetrical proportions). After checking out the artworks and Chippendale furniture in the mansion, you can stroll around the spectacular gardens, centred around a lake and dotted with elegant follies. If you want to make the petrolhead in the family happy, you could take them to Haynes Motor Museum (20 minutes). Here, in a former munitions depot, is more than a century’s worth of vintage cars and motorcycles, from a 1915 Ford Model T to a Formula One Williams, plus sections devoted to luxury vehicles and microcars. Why not make like the Ancient Romans and head to the city of Bath (55 minutes)? Book yourself into a spa to soak in mineral-rich thermal waters, or simply stroll around the Georgian centre pretending to be a Jane Austen heroine (the author lived in the city in the early 1800s).
