  • Quiet Somerset meadow site 10 minutes' drive from Bruton
  • A 10-minute drive to Stourhead and 25 minutes to Longleat
  • Simple facilities provided, plus a firepit for each pitch
You may possibly hear the sound of a few animals in neighbouring fields, the odd tractor going about its business or children playing in a distant part of the farm, but otherwise it’s a very peaceful rural setup on site at Kingsettle Camping Retreat, in the Somerset countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Bruton. This is a place that’s all about enjoying nature – pitches are mown into a meadow, so you’ll be surrounded by wild grasses and flowers and may well share your space with all sorts of wildlife. Firepits are provided so you can cook dinner over a campfire while watching the sun set or keep warm while looking up into a canopy of stars overhead. Supplies for your campfire or picnic can be picked up in Bruton, which has plenty of independent shops along with a collection of lovely places to eat if you’d rather treat yourselves. There are a few country pubs around too – one of the best locally is about a five-minute drive or 45-minute walk away. Back at base, facilities have been kept simple but all essentials are covered – guests have access to toilets, showers, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and places to charge gadgets. As this site is just on the edge of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you won’t be short of places for a scenic walk or bike ride nearby. Kingsettle is also in a handy spot for getting out and about, as within a 10-minute drive, guests can get to Stourhead's house and gardens, Hauser & Wirth Somerset or The Newt in Somerset. Also catch an event at The Bath & West Showground (20 minutes’ drive), mingle with the animals at Longleat’s safari park (25 minutes) or soak up the views at Stonehenge (35 minutes).

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: I loved the tranquility of the pitch and the facilities were clean and tidy throughout my stay. It was my first experience of a compost loo but I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the cubicles each day. I liked the separate cold washroom and the washing up area and showers too.

Disliked: There wasnt anything I disliked at all

Liked: Spacious pitch with own fire pit. 2 great size shower cubicles with enough space to store your clothes. Undercover washing up area and clean toilets and other facilities. Good communication and very friendly welcome. The campsite was very peaceful and quiet. Ping pong table and honesty shop.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Showers were warm and clean. Day room was a nice touch.

Disliked: The site looked overgrown rather than managed mown and wild areas and the ground was not in a good condition for camping or driving on and off the site.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. This season has not been easy due to continual rain and some of the tracks were struggling to cope. I am in the process of getting some more stone put down in the more troubled areas, to assist campers in the future. A lot of the site is left natural to allow wildlife to enjoy the area as well as campers, admittedly the weather conditions have not been favourable to showing this off at its best. I wish you luck with your future sites of choice.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful and peaceful campsite in the middle of nature. Spacious pitch with far reaching views. Compost loos and showers in sheds…this is the way forward for a low impact and light touch campsite, unused space left to rewild…the whole thing is quietly marvelous!!! Many thanks and see you again

Local attractions

Built in the 1700s, Stourhead (10 minutes’ drive) is a National Trust-run house renowned for its Palladian-style architecture (with its exquisitely symmetrical proportions). After checking out the artworks and Chippendale furniture in the mansion, you can stroll around the spectacular gardens, centred around a lake and dotted with elegant follies. If you want to make the petrolhead in the family happy, you could take them to Haynes Motor Museum (20 minutes). Here, in a former munitions depot, is more than a century’s worth of vintage cars and motorcycles, from a 1915 Ford Model T to a Formula One Williams, plus sections devoted to luxury vehicles and microcars. Why not make like the Ancient Romans and head to the city of Bath (55 minutes)? Book yourself into a spa to soak in mineral-rich thermal waters, or simply stroll around the Georgian centre pretending to be a Jane Austen heroine (the author lived in the city in the early 1800s).
