  • Somerset farmstead glamping site with sea views near Blue Anchor
  • Exmoor National Park 15 minutes’ drive; beach 10 minutes’ walk
  • Next to the West Somerset Railway; station 10 minutes' walk away
If you can’t decide between moorland and seaside for your Somerset stay, make your way to Marshwood Copse. This rural site is sandwiched between Exmoor National Park (15 minutes’ drive) for long bracing hikes, and Blue Anchor beach (10 minutes’ walk) for family days out on the sands by the Bristol Channel. The campsite has views of the sea as well as the West Somerset Railway, which runs alongside the fields of this historic working farmstead. Railway buffs can happily watch steam trains chug past from their pitches or take a ride from the heritage station in Blue Anchor, 10 minutes' walk. In fact, this site is so well placed for local attractions that you can abandon the car for the day and pretty much walk everywhere. If you’d like to stretch your legs on a long hike, set off for medieval Dunster (an hour on foot), or stick closer to basecamp with a visit to the local pubs and cafés within 20 minutes’ walk. If you do have the car, head for harbourside Watchet (10 minutes’ drive) for fish and chips from the takeaways or stock up on camping essentials in Minehead (15 minutes), where there's also an indie cinema – handy for those days when the weather isn’t playing ball.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely quiet location with a view of the estuary and the West Somerset Railway. Clean, compostable toilet facilities.

Disliked: A little too quiet for us, as there were only 2/1 other guests. No signage and the road up was a little unkempt. Everywhere was sloped, which made it tricky at times.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Dan Thank you for your kind review. It is indeed a sloping field and the facilities we have are at the top to make the best of the view. That said there are a few flatter areas if you lnow where to find them. This is something we will work on. This camping area has intentionally been left uncrowded and open so that people can enjoy the space in peace and enjoy the wildlife thalt we are lucky enough to have here. I rappreciate the quiter side of camping is not for everyone. I hope you enjoyed the surrounding area and all it has to offer There is much for all ages to engage with. You are not the first to mention signage and I agree. We will be putting additional information and signs out very soon. Thank you for staying with us :) Kind regards Lisa

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location is excellent, the beach is walking distance but there is free parking. Dogs are allowed on the beach and it’s not busy there so we enjoyed a whole day with a picnic and swimming including an evening bbq. When the tide is in the water is perfect for paddle boarding. Minehead was a short drive away with supermarkets to pick up food and drinks. There are arcades and touristy things in Minehead which our older children enjoyed. There is also Dunster beach not far along the coast which was semi sandy and quite nice too. The accommodation is beautiful, you can see the sea in one direction and rolling countryside in the others. There is a toilet which is clean and has loo roll supplied. As long as you go prepared you’ll have a good stay. The owner was amazing, I can’t emphasise enough how helpful and friendly she was. Nothing was too much trouble and she made a point to check we were okay. I would definitely go back 100% but next time I’ll take better equipment, as we are camping newbies we weren’t very well organised. I’d also like to try a night in the bell tents :) All in all I’d give 5 stars. I can’t think of one fault

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: WE stayed in the main tent field. Very good space with loads of room so we were really a decent distance away from the other campers. This was as close to wild camping as you can get. The composting toilet was a first for me but was immaculate and in a much better condition than the other site I used during my tour. The hosts brought us a bottle of fresh water each to make sure we were served and welcomed us to the location personally. Great for stargazing too with the milky way just coming visible to the naked eye and a few meteors shooting through the sky. Would certainly stay here again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The setting was perfect - views of the sea and and the steam train in the distance - clear night skies and the odd deer in the fields. There was also eggs and fruit/veg for sale - we missed out on the eggs! Lisa was a very helpful host - as she is in her first year of running a camp site she was very open to suggestions and whilst we were there for the 3 days she put into place a couple of things that would make such a difference to her guests. The composting loo was cleaned twice a day and I can confirm the lights do work so perfectly fine for a night visit to the facilities. I understand there is going to be a shower in place but again if you know there isnt one then you can have a "strip wash" so not an issue. This is somewhere I would go back to and would recommend it

Disliked: Not a dislike but some sort of signage would be helpful on arrival just to know you are in the right place!

From the manager: Hii Thank you for your kind and thoughtful review. It was a pleasure to host you and I really appreciate the time you gave in talking to me and the suggestions made :) I will definately look into getting the signage up. Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: One night stay with my 10 year old. Beautiful views and amazing access to the beach and Blue Anchor train station where there are stunning sunsets. The host was friendly and welcoming, so lovely real personal touch. Clean and well kept compost toilet. Must also mention beautiful clear sky to stargaze.

Disliked: No shower but this is made clear, just feel it would be a great addition. That said first year for the campsite and I can imagine that these things will be added with time.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Epic stay at Marshwood Copse in the new camping field! 4 days of peace and quiet, amazing views and lucky for me, beautiful weather. Large field - pitch where you like, limited numbers, loads of space to choose from. I was on the top edge (some slopes) but this gave the best view across the bay to the Quantocks in the background, punctuated periodically by the local steam train trailing through. Compost loo was very clean and tidy. Grass was now cut which stopped getting dewy feet in the mornings. Lisa was lovely and nothing was too much trouble. I would definitely come back again, in fact trying to find another date for this summer. It is what it says, a basic campsite but just what I liked.

Disliked: Not a dislike but just a suggestion. Maybe consider an info sheet for campers on arrival with layout of camping/farm/footpath, instructions for loo and light, local info such as eateries and where to head locally for supplies. Also wonder if you might consider fire pit hire and a bag of logs. It was so lush sitting in the evenings as the light/warmth faded.

From the manager: Good morning :) Thank you for your lovely review. The words 'epic stay' have brought a smile to my face that will last quit a long time. We loved having you here and hope you do indeed manage to find the time to come back. Thank you also for your suggestions, i will definitely look into getting some sort of information pack together. We hope to see you again soon. Lisa
