  • A five-minute walk to open moorland; 25 minutes’ drive to Porlock
  • Quiet, no-frills hilltop pitches in an International Dark Sky Reserve
Seeking walking, cycling and wild-camping adventures in Exmoor National Park? Thumbs up for The Heart of Exmoor, a Somerset base with direct access to the moor and simple facilities on site. From your hilltop pitch, you can plan your holiday adventures while contemplating spectacular views of Winsford Hill and Withypool Common. The back-to-basics site is spacious and peaceful, with basic amenities including portable toilets, cold water and recycling bins (but please try to take trash home with you). After you’ve made friends with the farm animals, let the kids mess around in streams or walk your dogs across hilly fields. And even if you're out and about all day, save energy for later so you don’t miss the chance to check out the Milky Way on clear nights. If you’re low on supplies, wander down to Exford (half an hour’s walk) to raid the local store, pop into a tea room for scones and cream, or sip a pint outside a pub overlooking the village green – it’s the starting point of many local walks, including a circular route around Room Hill (keep any eye out and you’ll spot the campsite in the distance). Back on site, a two-mile hike leads across the moor to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the national park, where in good weather you can see for more than 80 miles. Along the way, look out for grazing Exmoor ponies and Highland cows as well as birds of prey circling above.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: A lovely site with amazing view over the farmland and a bit of the moors. We could see free roaming ponies and sheep on the hills. Very friendly owner too who went out of her way to send us screen shots of OS map which allowed us to do a fabulous 5 hour walk from the site. You can also stay as late as you want as there are not check in or out times! Facilities are simple (ie composting toilet and washbasin only) but extremely clean.

Disliked: Just a note. We had a great pitch but I could see that some of the land is sloping.

From the manager: Hey, it was great to catch up with you both and hear of your travels. I'm so pleased that you managed to make use of the map screen shots and enjoy a walk :)

Perfect escape for 'nearly wild' camping.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Hilltop location, stunning views, quiet and peaceful, lots of space, no set pitches, dog friendly, amazing night sky (campsite in the middle of the Dark Sky Reserve,) access to fantastic walks in every direction, lovely owner who came over for a chat, new and clean composting toilet, access to water and purification tabs, thorough and easy welcome info and directions, and no restrictions on the time you can arrive and leave!

Disliked: Most of the site is on a gentle slope but there are still lots of suitable areas to pitch. Not a dislike but more just a consideration!

From the manager: It was so nice to meet you and hear of the amazing adventures you've already had on Exmoor! I'm pleased you had a lovely stay in you beautiful van.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: My friend wanted to go stargazing, we found Heart of Exmoor through PitchUp.com and booked. Serena sent us a detailed email with directions and guidance. Arrived and set up tent really well, road is a little bumpy into the site be careful! We were welcomed by Serena and talked through the facilities available. Had a lovely night camping, stargazing and relaxing in the tranquil environment. Will definitely come again.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Quiet location. Friendly owner. Arrive and depart any time. No charge for dogs

Disliked: Design of the compost toilet. Used them before but this one you have to sit far forward to urinate in a small hole meaning more than just your bum cheeks have contact with the toilet which I personally found disconcerting.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hey, It was lovely to meet you and your dogs! We've had lots of really positive comments about the compost toilet so I'm sorry you disliked it, thank you for your comment. Serena

Local attractions

Exmoor is criss-crossed with hundreds of miles of bridleways for traffic-free walking and cycling. If you’re travelling with kids, try the family walk from the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (20 minutes' drive), which leads through woodland along the Barle river, explore the moors on horseback (20 minutes), or on guided safaris in a four wheel drive. All that sound like too much activity? Try out your falconry skills while handling birds of prey at North Devon Hawk Walks (15 minutes), or attend keeper talks and spot rare black leopards at Exmoor Zoo (half an hour). Most kids are also keen to see the creepy-crawlies at Tropiquaria Wildlife Park (35 minutes). The nearest beach is at Porlock Weir (25 minutes), a shingle stretch where you can also pick up the South West Coast Path for strolls along clifftops. Further up Somerset’s north coast, you can take a dip in the Bristol Channel, go deep-sea fishing and try out numerous watersports – from surfing to coasteering – at seaside towns like Minehead (25 minutes) and Blue Anchor (45 minutes).
