Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely care free vibes. No designated pitches for those who didn’t have electric hook up. No restrictions on space. Options for different areas like family areas, group areas, quiet areas. Something for everyone. Showers and toilets all clean and plenty of them.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Super well organised site layout, loved the shop and cafe, ample showers and loos. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Jack always had a smile and happy to tow out caravans after heavy rainfall

Disliked: Babies/toddlers in the adult quiet area didn’t make the most sense to me - only disturbed our sleep on the first night but not ideal

From the manager: Great to hear Jack looked after you - we’re very proud of our team and we’ll pass on your thanks to him! Not sure how the baby/toddler thing happened - that’s not how it’s sposed to be so please accept our apologies. We look forward to having you stay again soon Jules and the team

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Everything! From the moment you arrive at reception, you are greeted and in the hands of a great team of hosts. Free-range camping is the nature of this site and the team ensures your stay is as free as possible. Facilities and on-site options were exceptional. I am not going to criticise the weather or slight water-logged fields as this is not the fault of Jules and the team but simply adds to the experience of camping. If these factors are not your cup of tea then I might suggest B&B, hotels, AirBnB's etc. Petruth even has its own app, which means you can get ready for your holiday as well as work out the runnings of the site once you are there. Jules and the team have thought about camping holidays and applied their knowledge to ensuring happy campers all around. The team seem to work around the clock and you're always greeted with a smile. They are happy to stop and have a quick chat, making you feel right at home. Cheedar Village and the Gorge are a 10 - 15 minute walk from the site (for those of you not familiar of the local area), and there's a cider tap room round around the corner, along with a weekend car boot market, complete with a meat van!! Perfect for those evening BBQs. Waste disposal splits to recycling to minimalise landfill. Bring a container for your ease, though I soon got this sussed by simply filling the washing-up bowl with dirty dishes and recycling of an evening.

Disliked: Nothing - if you really want me to split hairs, the motion sensor lights in the toilets switch off after a few seconds of not moving. That's it! Seriously though people, it's camping!! It's really hard to dislike things when you're supposed to be getting back to basics anyway! Furthermore, the facilities are only as clean as the person who used them before you! Not really the campsite's issue who tirelessly keep them cleaned and re-stocked!

From the manager: Chris What a lovely summary - you captured so much of what we’re really all about, and I’m so glad we exceeded expectations! It’s all about getting lots and lots of little things right and we know only too well how easy it is to miss something. I wasn’t aware of the light issue But I do know we can adjust them, so we get onto that right away! Thank you again for taking the time to describe your stay and we hope to see you again soon Joolz and the team

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The toilets and showers were great - probably the warmest, most powerful shower I’ve had camping! Never had to wait for a shower, even in peak times and there was a team of people constantly cleaning them. Lovely to have food vendors in the evenings and the onsite shop had everything you needed. Quiet field was lovely and quiet! They give you a choice of the quiet or the louder (family) field & we’re glad there was an option as the quiet field was just lovely to relax! Being able to walk into Cheddar was amazing - we didn’t have to move the van for the whole weekend!

Disliked: A lot of the toilets had broken soap dispensers! Although you could see they were full, you couldn’t actually use. The hand sanitizer dispensers on the end of the run of cubicles were also empty.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The site was well maintained. The staff are super friendly and cannot do enough to make sure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. The facilities is clean and well maintained. The food shacks sell great food and reasonably priced. They have plenty of fire pits and logs which on an evening is great for the family and friends to circle round and roast marshmallows.

Disliked: Nothing. The site is great.

Route directions

Use postcode BS27 3XW for your satnav but please stop following it and start following the directions below when you are a couple of miles away - that way you'll not end up on an unmade road or on the site drive. If you are approaching Cheddar from the west, and you are towing a caravan or driving a large motorhome, then please exit the M5 motorway at junction 22, not 21. Travel along the A371 through the centre of Cheddar village. You will pass Tesco on your right and the Bath Arms on your left. Continue on this road passing St Andrew's Church followed by Cheddar Football Club on your right. After a further 250 yards, take a right turn off the A371 into Labourham Way. Take an immediate left, slow to walking pace and you’ll see our large sign in front of you – simply take a sharp left through the gateway and follow the track into the carpark. If you are approaching Cheddar from the east, and you are towing a caravan or driving a large motorhome on the B3135, please do not turn left signposted Gliding Club, but continue down the Gorge. Travel along the A371 through Draycott. You will pass the Cheddar Garden Centre and the Kart track followed by a nasty S bend. On exiting the bend, take an immediate left off the A371 at the "Welcome to Cheddar" sign into Labourham Way then another immediate left, slow to walking pace and you’ll see our large sign in front of you – simply take a sharp left through the gateway and follow the track into the carpark. Public transport: The bus stop is just a 10 minute walk away and will take to you either Weston Super Mare or Yatton train stations within an hour.

Local attractions

There’s loads within walking distance of the campsite to keep you entertained. Fancy sampling local produce? Cheddar Ales Brewery, Tap Room and Shop (five minutes’ walk) has a range of award-wining ales. Walk a bit further on a Sunday morning and you’ll come to Cheddar Car Boot and Market (10 minutes), with a lakeside setting and lots of bric-à-brac to browse. Cheddar itself is a 10-minute meander along the Strawberry Line footpath, crossing the Cheddar Yeo river into the village, where there’s a posh pub (all the more reason to leave the car behind), a butcher, baker and supermarkets. A few more minutes’ stroll gets you to Kings Fitness and Leisure with a pool (handy for rainy days), Ocean Adventures Soft Play and sailing on the reservoir. Cheddar Gorge and Caves is a 20-minute amble from your door and is home to restaurants, a cheese factory, a cider mill and souvenir shops, as well as caverns and tunnels running deep under the Mendip Hills. A short car journey takes you to Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes’ drive), with spectacular subterranean caverns and family entertainment like pirate ships and dinosaur trails. Wells (20 minutes) is the smallest city in England and has a landmark cathedral and a medieval bishop’s palace in moated gardens. Within half an hour’s drive you have a choice of sandy beaches: Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea and Berrow, and at Mendip Activity Centre (20 minutes) you can learn to ski, go twilight tobogganing or play golf-frisbee on woodland trails.
