Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: scenery was lovely, lots of wild flowers between the pitches. campsite owner checked in very briefly to make sure everything was okay and that I was settled in. Plenty of resources available detailing local walks and activities.

Disliked: The ground was a little wet, but I visited very early in the season, I'm sure this wouldn't be an issue later on.

From the manager: Hi, I am sorry you could only rate the campsite 8/10, you have spoilt my two and a half year record of 10/10 of which I was so proud! But I guess it had to happen sometime. I respect your review as you have to review as you see it. But could I just answer a few of your comments: I hope this is the right person, but I think you booked last minute, arriving that afternoon mid week. This booking popped up on my phone, but unfortunately I was in hospital, having been admitted urgently over the weekend, all a bit of a shock as I am normally super fit. I phoned you immediately and mentioned that the site would not be prepared as usual and if you wanted to book elsewhere or have a refund I was perfectly happy to do so. You did not want either. So I arranged for a friend to pop down and make sure you were ok, sadly that was the best I could do in the circumstances. The site was wet because we have had the worst winter and wettest spring on record, I am sorry I really can not help that. Thank goodness it is so much better now. I had delayed a month from usual opening because of this. We do not offer wifi at the site, as we are entirely off grid, so we encourage people not to rate the wifi. Lastly, I see you rated your accommodation as 8/10 as well. As you brought your own tent , I would strongly urge a trip to the camping shop to treat yourself to an upgrade, get that tent you have always dreamed about! Sorry to have missed you. All Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We had a wonderful return trip to Edwards Farm. Small back to basics site with lovely views and good sized pitches. Facilities are great with toilets, outdoor showers, a washing up area and a small field shelter which are always clean and tidy. Only a short walk up the hill to Shaftesbury and lots of good local walks from the campsite or within a short drive. Alex is a great host and communication was excellent, we were warned the field was rather wet and that there was a temporary issue with the hot water the day after we booked. This wasn't an issue for us but it was nice to know beforehand as other's may have let you get there first. This was our second trip here and we will definitely be back again!

From the manager: Thanks Matt, much appreciated review, thank goodness there was a welcome break in the weather at least for a short time. Look forward to your return. Best Alex PS Sorry about the rugby!

Bell tent (wood-burning stove)

Liked: We stayed for 3 nights in the 6 man Bell tent with a wood burner. It was great not having to worry about pitching and striking a tent. Lovely site, tucked away in a corner of Dorset with amazing views across the countryside. Facilities are basic but kept clean and tidy. Alex is a great host providing extra information before we areived to help us find the site and popping over during out stay to make sure everything was OK. We'd planned to use the site as a base to do other things, but ended up changing plans so we could spend more time there to enjoy the views and some stargazing. Lots to do in the surrounding area, spent an afternoon in Shaftesbury visiting the Abbey and Gold Hill, its a steep hill to get there but not very far and plenty of pubs and cafes to reward yourself when you get there. We didn't have children with us so havent provided a rating and there is no WiFi, but data signal was fine when I needed it.

From the manager: Thanks for the lovely review and for being so speedy with it! Very much appreciated. You managed to pick the weather perfectly, arrived just after a storm and left before one. I could do with you booking every week, as a guarantee for others. Hopefully see you again. Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I loved the location and the layout of the camp. I absolutely loved the outdoor showers, I had 3 showers during our 2 night stay!! So perfect. The washing up area was nice and clean and I loved all the little touches, like the welcome leaflet, the firepit wall, the jars and tealights. The communication with Alex prior to arrival was amazing & so, so helpful. Thank you! Also the town if Shaftesbury is a 20 min walk and such a gorgeous town. Can't wait to stay again!

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Thanks so much for the review, and great artwork! I am getting a good collection from the season, as someone who can't even draw a stickman properly, I am always amazed at drawing and painting. Really glad you had a good time. Best Alex

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We had a wonderfull stay at Edwards Farm! It is small with beautifull view and you find there everything you need, simple and clean. The shower runs on sunlight so you might need to take a cold shower....;). Alex is a wonderfull host, very helpfull, friendly, fulltime of story's and a perfect guide to help you find the most beautiful sides and pubs and restaurants.

Disliked: Cannot think of anything...

Local attractions

A visit to Shaftesbury is sure to be on the cards when staying at this site – the historic town is a mere mile away, so you can easily go off on a wander around the shops or get up to Gold Hill in the centre for views across the vale. If stretching the legs isn’t really for you, admire animals instead at Longleat House (half an hour’s drive) and Monkey World (40 minutes). Those more culturally curious can navigate their way towards National Trust attractions like Stourhead (20 minutes), King Alfred's Tower (half an hour) and Montacute House (45 minutes) or skedaddle to the ancient site of Stonehenge (35 minutes) to gaze at the granddaddy of all things historical. Keen for the coast? Peruse the seaside around Poole (50 minutes) and Bournemouth (an hour), perhaps heading off on an amble between the two; urban explores are to be had around Bath’s Roman ruins (55 minutes), at Salisbury’s high-spired cathedral (50 minutes) or closer by at the abbey in the pretty settlement of Sherborne (half an hour).
