  • Wild camping site on an outdoor activity centre five miles from Poole
  • A 10-minute drive from Poole and half an hour from the Jurassic Coast
  • Activities on site including archery, mountain biking and axe throwing
From pottering about Poole and scoping out the Jurassic Coast to crossbow shooting, big tree climbing and mountain biking on site, you’ll want to get everyone on deck for a break at Adventure Pirate, five miles from Poole. This Dorset site is wild camping galore and you’ll really be able to muck in, as it’s attached to an activity centre that runs a bucket load of outdoor activities. You’ll need to roll up with all your equipment here (tents or bivvies and nibbles and drinks included), as there are no facilities other than a couple of composting toilets, a drinking water tap, a washing-up station and some rubbish bins. Once you’ve left your car in the car park and hauled your kit to your chosen pitch in one of the site’s trolleys, you’ll be going fully wild, with ground fires permitted to keep you feeling toasty. There are five acres of safe woodlands on site, so the kids are free to go off and build dens, get muddy or play their go-to games. On top of that, you may very well leave with a new skill under your belt, as the site runs activities including axe throwing, archery, crossbow or air rifle shooting, big tree climbing, survival, foam gun battles and mountain biking. All activities are subject to availability and a fee, and in busier periods, additional sign-up sheets may be displayed (by the way, guests get a 25% discount). For a drink to wash all those activities down or a meal to get your energy levels back on track, Lytchett Minster has a couple of pubs 15 minutes’ walk away or Poole’s got its own delectable dining scene, 10 minutes’ drive away.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: A campsite for those wanting a more natural/ wild camping experience but also with good facilities. A choice of pitches in forest and on grass. The facilities are intended to be basic but actually better though out than many other campsites. The compost toilets were well maintained and had lights, the shower was warm and the washing up area also has warm water. There are numerous fire pits and cut logs to sit on. Very reasonably priced with no extra charges for showers etc.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: The welcome from the Owner, James was great and we did have our choice of pitches as the site had no residents on our arrival. The facilities were up to scratch and special mention should go to the showers that were really good even though one was out of action due to maintenance.

Disliked: We left with no reason to list any dislikes.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Lovely location in the woods, kids free to roam around. Allowed open fires.

Disliked: Toilets- have used compost toilets before with no issues but these were not great. Very small and cramped (and I am not big!). No sawdust to put in.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We do love our family friendly campsite in the woods. With regards to your dislike - Our compost toilets; This is the first negative feedback we’ve had for them. Usually people say they’re great. We’re not sure where you’ve been before with more spacious ones, but ours a pretty luxury compared to others we’ve seen. We went for higher end ones. We don’t put sawdust in our compost toilets. We clean them 3/4 times a day and ask people to cover everything in toilet roll. We found when we had sawdust in them, it just went everywhere, (all over the floors, down the wee holes) and either blocked the pipes or just looked really untidy. With regards to the 6/10 for WiFi. We don’t have any WiFi so a N/A would have probably have been more of an appropriate score. We’re pretty chuffed with the 6/10 considering there isn’t any!

Excellent dog friendly site with all the amenities you need!

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: I practically had the place to myself. Although advertised as wild camping I was pleasantly surprised the shower was hot! Great base to explore all the sites Dorset has to offer.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: This has to be one of the best campsites I've been too! Loved every second! It was quiet on the weekend I went, which helped, but the pitches were great, the toilets were good and the showers were good too! When I booked I was wondering if because it's in the woods, would there be any sunny spots, as I didn't want to be in the shade and be cold, and I managed to gwt a lovely sunny spot in the middle, which was awesome! Becky the host was so friendly and helpful! There was so much to do for kids there too, so I will definitely be going back with my 2 girls at some point!

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely fantastic camp site. So nice to be able to pitch up where you like and enjoy your own, open fire close to your tent. We went with 3 young children, but would suit anyone looking for a traditional night under the stars. There is plenty for the kids to do close by, tuck shop in the wood, washing up station and we'll maintained toilets. We will 100% visit again.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Very relaxed campsite, loved pitching my tent surrounded by trees. Toilets, showers and washing up sinks were all clean. Shower was my fave, hot rainfall indoor/outdoor shower so you could see the trees and hear the birds but also have privacy. Also as it is a family site it was nice and quiet by bed time.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: The site is great for families and children. The woods and adventure playpark is paradise for children. Toilets and showers were immaculate and clearly checked regularly by staff. I do not have anything negative to say about the campsite.

Local attractions

Activities aren't limited to the site – and that’s for certain at Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (five minutes’ drive). As well as bringing together a farm fantasy with interactive animal activities, this site has indoor and outdoor play areas and woodland trails and a maze (perhaps one of the only places you’ll want to get lost on purpose). Local beaches could certainly count as a playground of their own too, as beach sports and watersports are available for a chock-a-block day in Bournemouth (25 minutes), a nice contrast to the more austere Victorian parks and gardens, museums and galleries in the town. Then, of course, there’s Poole (10 minutes), with the riveting water rides at Splashdown and the harbour for windsurfing, kayaking and the works. You’ll surely want to take a bite out of the Jurassic Coast too, given that it’s only half an hour’s drive away. Whether it’s a scramble over Dancing Ledge (half an hour), a climb to see Old Harry Rocks (half an hour) or a duck into the old quarry caves at Winspit Quarry (35 minutes), this scenic part of the coast is crammed with beauty spots.
