  • Peaceful glamping site with views of the countryside, lake and ponies
  • A 20-minute drive from Exmoor National Park and 40 to Woolacombe beach
  • Games barn, fishing, tennis court; units have beds with feather duvets
A stay at Deer's Leap Retreat means settling down in a bell tent including a woodburning stove and a real bed with a soft feather duvet and proper mattress, with nothing but the sound of the birds, sheep and Jersey cows to disturb you from staring out at views of the far-reaching countryside… If that sounds a little too serene, activities at the park are centred around the farm and surrounding rural area of north Devon: you can fish at the lake, feed the chickens or play tennis on the all-season court (bring a racket) on site. Lots of outdoor space is around for kids to play on and a games barn with a pool table, table tennis and darts should keep them entertained if it’s raining out. For trips further afield, ask at the farm about walks straight from the gates to local villages full of old cottages and past wildflower-filled hedgerows with birds to spot including pheasants and buzzards; check with staff regarding activities including horse riding, fishing, golfing and clay shooting in the local area as well. If you're hoping for harder hikes, the hilly open moorland of Exmoor National Park is a 20-minute journey by car – with regular tours leaving from Dulverton – and Woolacombe Beach is within 40 minutes for seaside strolls along the South West Coast Path. Back in your bell tent after sandy sunbathing days or windswept walks, you can cosy up on the floor cushions and rugs while drinking the tea and coffee provided.

Local attractions

Get your dose of sand and fresh sea air… but first, you’ll have to decide between several beaches. Super surf and some good spots for sandcastle building at Croyde beach (an hour) perhaps? Fishing and rockpooling at Lynmouth beach (55 minutes)? Tucking into your fish and chips on the boulders at Lynton beach (55 minutes) instead? Saunton Sands beach (55 minutes) is another hot spot for surfing or swimming, but those of you who are looking to track down some good spots inland may want to have a nosey around the Exmoor villages of Dulverton, Winsford, Withypool and Exford (under 30 minutes), where there are some splendid shops and that sort of thing. Of course, while you’re so close to Exmoor, a hike to the highest point, Dunkery Beacon (40 minutes), may very well be on the cards. The Tarr Steps nature reserve (20 minutes) is another hiker’s haven, with more strenuous or easygoing routes for every family member. While you’re around those parts, call by Landacre Bridge (30 minutes) to see an ancient monument along the river Barle and the Two Moors Way trail.
