  • Quiet adults-only wild camping on the edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Great base for ramblers, climbers, outdoor pursuits and cyclists
  • Spacious grass pitches surrounded by woodland; dogs are welcome
Giving a rare chance for people to wild camp on Dartmoor, Five Wyches Farm Camping is a peaceful, family-run site right on the edge of the national park, surrounded by fields and trees and with an abundance of wildlife to look out for. There's plenty of space to choose from, and it's up to you whether you'd like to pitch close to other guests or tuck yourselves away in a solitary corner of the meadow or woodland. This place is also for adults only and teenagers aged 15 or over. This Devon spot is a handy base for walkers, cyclists and climbers keen to face new outdoor challenges, and there’s plenty of grassy space on site where you can chill out afterwards. Pets can join in the fun too, as there is a separate fenced-in field for dogs to have some off-lead runs. Firepits are available for alfresco cooking adventures or just a campfire – logs, kindling and firelighters can all be supplied if required. It's a short walk to the town, which hosts a number of bijou shops, cafés and restaurants, and for those who like a pint or two, there are a number of pubs. The town also has a number of small supermarkets (five minutes' drive) where you can pick up barbecue goodies and other camping essentials. For those who prefer a quiet evening in camp, the lack of light pollution often means dark starry skies – and occasionally a shooting star or two. Simple eco-friendly amenities include fresh water, long-drop compost toilets and a hot outdoor shower. Recycling is actively encouraged, and there are facilities for chemical toilets and grey waste water.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely site, really friendly and welcoming and walking distance into Bovey, A bit wilder than most sites which I like, especially the shower open to the trees. I will definitely be back soon

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite (wild, woodland)

Liked: The Woodlands are a fantastic addition to this year pitches and really allos you to immerse yourself in your natural surroundings. During the 1 night stay here we saw a plethora of local wildlife from our tent. The chance to hire a firepit, logs, kindling and firestarters for just £12 is amazing. They take card or cash. A very quiet campsite just off the A38 is very wlecoming for travellers wanting to explore more of Devon.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Quiet site, good location for the moors. Close to Bovey Tracey which has shops, restaurants, take aways etc. Compost toilets kept clean. Open air shower lovely. Friendly campsite team.

Disliked: Grass clippings left all over the site, so they were sticking to your feet all the time. I spent 30 mins just scraping them away from around our pitch. Drainage on the site is awful. We camped in the bottom field, which turned into a swamp, and never dried. Our car got stuck, (as did many others), and we ended up having to park across the other side of the field from our tent. Frustrating when it came to packing up, as this was one reason we had chosen this site, always prefer to park near our tent.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We loved every moment of our stay. Compost toilets and shower spotlessly clean, site is quiet and the enclosed dog walking field is amazing. Hosts were so helpful - advising us where to move to within the fields when the torrential rain threatened to turn our motorhome into a boat! 100% recommend and will definitely return 🌟 🌟 🌟🌟🌟

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly owners, a dog walking field and fairly even ground (used one chock just to completely even out our camper). Plenty of space during a weekend in May. Other campers were quiet and respectful. Price fair for what you get, and it's in a perfect spot for exploring Dartmoor. Outdoor shower was hot and lovely to use as it was hot, not sure it would have been as fun in the cold! Composting toilet clean, and water/waste facilities handy.

Disliked: The grass had just been cut and it was a nightmare getting grass absolutely everywhere in the camper, on all our clothes and shoes. Would have been great if it had been raked up beforehand. Also the shop only sold firewood/kindling and some random bits like magnets. Would love to see some cold drinks (not necessarily alcoholic!) or snacks for sale. But these are small quibbles!

Local attractions

All you active types can dash off into Dartmoor National Park for outdoor adventures scrambling up rocky tors and seeking out medieval ruins, walking or cycling the Templar Way and walking to ancient relics including the prehistoric standing stones at Scorhill Stone Circle (35 minutes’ drive).  The Natural Trust’s Parke is adjacent to the Five Wyches for a walk along the banks of the River Bovey. You can also take bikes out along the old railway track that forms part of the Wray Valley Trail as part of your visit, or just explore the splendid gardens within its grounds. If your schedule is taking you towards the coast, the nearest beach at Teignmouth is backed by seafood cafés, and you can have a go on the amusements along the 19th-century pier. The sand at Ness Cove is a quieter option where dogs are welcome all year around. Both are about 25 minutes' drive away. Hit a rainy day? There are plenty of indoor attractions in this area, including Jolly Roger’s Lifesize Models (15 minutes' walk), House of Marbles (three minutes' drive) and the Trago Mills indoor shopping experience (10 minutes).
