  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven in a secluded Cornwall valley
  • A 20-minute drive from Truro and 15 minutes from St Mawes
  • Wild camping with composting toilets; pubs, beaches, and shops nearby
Lean back and watch as the wildlife plays out before your eyes… make base at Treburthes, a secluded site in a valley, with a trickling stream surrounded by woodlands. From this wild camping spot 20 minutes’ drive from Truro and 15 minutes from St Mawes, the Roseland Peninsula and its sandy beaches, fishing harbours, and Cornwall countryside are all easily accessible. With the Roseland Heritage Coast and its two sandy beaches a 10-minute drive away, this is a back to basics site with composting toilets, where you can truly settle in, enjoy your stay, and ogle over the wildlife and local scenery. Don't feel as though you’re completely cut off from society, though. A five-minute drive will take you into the village of Veryan, where there’s a shop, park, and pub to dig into local food and produce. Here, you can visit a converted 16th-century mill or wonderfully Cornish cafés selling cream teas and cakes during the day and woodfired pizzas with a bar in the evenings. For the adventurous souls, coastal paths will take you further out, but you’ll always end up back in the peaceful grounds on the site, whether it’s to end the day with a barbecue or an early snooze along to nature’s soundtrack.

Local attractions

Cathedral or Cornish pasty? The city of Truro (20 minutes’ drive) is not far away. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you could catch a ferry from St Mawes (15 minutes) to the artsy seaside town of Falmouth, where the sea views are best beheld from the clifftop Pendennis Castle. Just be sure to plot in some time for fishing first, as St Mawes harbours some ripe fishing grounds. If you’ve got children, there are a host of Cornish attractions in the area likely to keep them entertained. It’s plants galore at the Eden Project (30 minutes) and the Lost Gardens Heligan (20 minutes). Meanwhile, at Flambards Theme Park (50 minutes), the whole family will be flying through the air in no time. Leave some time for Trelissick Gardens (30 minutes) too, a country estate with prim and proper maritime views. Afterward, you can take up sail or simply meander around the estuary at the nearby Channals Creek (35 minutes).
