  • Peaceful glamping site with valley views four miles from St Ives
  • A 15-minute drive to St Michael's Mount and a handful of beaches
  • Charcoal and firepits for hire on site and shared kitchen facilities
Perhaps you're craving feel-good coastal walks or beaches with super surf and gold sand. Eves around a firepit or tucking into freshly-sizzled sausages over a barbecue? That’s the sort of stuff that Rock Bottom Orchard opens you up to – as well as splendid, relaxing views over sloping fields. You see, this well-maintained and excellently peaceful Cornwall glamping site is just four miles from St Ives and if you fancy it, it’s possible to walk all the way down to the South West Coast Path and Hayle Sands in just under an hour. So, that’s very gorgeous coastal walks sorted. What else? The site is also a great spot for cyclists for those of you who are looking to pedal out past the Hayle Estuary (25 minutes’ cycle), down to The Towans beaches (40 minutes) or into St Ives (25 minutes). As for treating the appetite you're likely to have built up from such adventures, the site also loans firepits and charcoal for barbecues. With a shared kitchenette on site, including a microwave, kettle and toaster facilities, you might want to grab your teabags and toast ingredients from two big supermarkets in Hayle, 10 minutes’ drive away. Other facilities on site include toilets and hot showers.

Tipi

Liked: The location and views are immense… the tipis are very cool and fairly warm in an evening

Disliked: Where to start with my review!! One shower and one toilet in a chip board surrounding for the entire site to use so potentially 8 plus people waiting , no sink to wash your hands after using the toilet other than the one in the tiny kitchen area used for washing dishes. All areas are dirty and unkempt .. long grass so wet feet always. No electricity supply to tipis despite being advertised as gas and electric included, electricity consists of 3 plug sockets in the chip board kitchen! Quite unhelpful owner of site, when we questioned the electricity , no hook up, he said can’t have everything… well we actually had nothing!!Tipi not weather proof at all. Rain coming in the top where top cover wasn’t set up correctly and regular visits from local wildlife coming under the side of the tent.No lighting in shower, toilet or kitchen area so every visit after dark needed a torch and a hope that the spiders were sleeping! This should be advertised as wild camping .. as advertised as gas and electric included assuming you have a hook up but you don’t and when we used the owners extension cable to blow up our airbed in the tipi he removed it from site so we had to ring him every time to add air throughout the week. Not worth the money certainly wouldn’t recommend it or ever stay again. The location is the only plus point to this site for the views ..this site needs to be given up as a bad idea!! We left a day early as storms were due overnight and didn’t have the confidence in the tipi withstanding it! So lost 2 days we love cornwall but rock bottom is aptly named and we will never return there

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful view. Nice please. Access to toilet. Kettle. Microwave.

Disliked: The toilet and kitchen area needs a good clean. Poor access to bed. Shower and kitchen is too small. Lots of spider webs. Grass under the outside table need to be cut.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: I stayed in the shepherds hut whilst doing a shot course in St Ives July 2023. Campsite was a beautiful haven from a bustling St Ives. Facilities are basic and may take some getting used to (hut made of chip board!) but everything you need is there: fridge/freezer/hot shower/ loo. Graham the owner was very friendly and helpful. I cooked on my campstove on the picnic hence or ate out in town. Beautiful wildlife haven, quiet with lots of wild and bird life and a pigeon called Walter (apparently)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely views and peaceful field. Only 10mins in car from St Ives.

Disliked: Was very hard to find the campsite - especially when dark. The listing says 'showers and toilets' when in fact there is just 1 of each in a chipboard hut which is shared between all of the site. Wasn't very pleasant. Didn't feel the price per night reflected the poor quality facilities. Tiny kitchenette which did have sink/fridge but again shared between the whole campsite and only 1 person could fit in at a time.

Tipi

Liked: The host was very friendly and gave us a full tour of our areas available. The tipi was impressive and comfortable. More facilities than named on booking (fridge, freezer etc) which were handy. Fresh towels out every few days and toilet roll provided readily. Amazing view over the valley and private area which the tipis are situated in.

Disliked: Hard to contact the host for check out (were unable to and had to set off home in the end). Uneven bollard in the ground in the parking bay resulted in us gaining a flat tyre. (We understand things happen but be aware when pulling into a bay as it spans two of three bays). The shower was quite unreliable for heat.

Local attractions

Those of you who are looking here for the fine sand and salty sea air will quickly find that there are plenty of options for your beach days. Little Porthgwidden Beach (15 minutes’ drive) is just the place for peaceful paddles, followed by a drink on the beach café terrace. As for any surfing fanatics, The Towans (15 minutes) is a top spot for all that business. On the flip side, Carbis Bay Beach (10 minutes) has far calmer waters, making it a fine place for laps up and down the beach. To the south, Marazion (15 minutes) has yet another sandy beach. However, the big pull here is St Michael's Mount (15 minutes), a medieval castle that rests on an island just off shore. You’ll have to cross the causeway to get there when the tide’s right (this is all part of the adventure), so be sure check ahead of time. St Ives has more opportunities for surfers, but while you’re there, don’t forget to pay a visit to the gallery at Tate St Ives (10 minutes). Hiring out paddleboards or taking a boat trip to Seal Island are other options here.
