  • Relaxed, back to basics camping overlooking Praa Sands beach
  • Beach pub serving food five minutes' walk away
  • Shower and toilet block, washing machine, phone and laptop charging
As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all? A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands… Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for kids to run around, and an honesty shop on site for basics. Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area. In the laundry area, there is a phone and laptop charging station and a freezer for storing any ice packs. For kids, there are retro game signs dotted around the site to encourage them to make new friends and get off their devices. There's also a QR code trail with music, tunes and other entertainment. A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Facilities are excellent, indoor area to wash dishes, tumble dryer, phone charge point. The showers are lovely and warm, very clean. The location was great, right next to beach with sea view! And also free WiFi on site was a bonus!

Disliked: It was a particularly wet week and the field was very muddy, we struggled to find somewhere to park the van where we wouldn't get stuck in the mud, no hard ground.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Location

Disliked: Nowhere to park campervan as the field was too wet. Lady was rude and would not give us a refund. We were told to get stuck and the farmer would pull us out in the morning. We left and parked elsewhere.

Local attractions

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the south coast with the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: the theme park Flambards and the National Seal Sanctuary are both within 10 to 15 minutes’ drive. Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard. Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount 10 minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays). Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).
