  • Family-friendly country site in South Downs National Park
  • Less than 10 minutes’ drive from Goodwood Estate festivals and events
  • Top spot for stargazing in Dark Sky Reserve
Stresses from your daily grind making life feel a bit sour? Get the bad taste out of your mouth with a sweet getaway at Orchard Cottage Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the small town of Petworth in West Sussex. Inside South Downs National Park, Orchard Cottage is a top spot to use as a base for exploring the spectacularly scenic Sussex countryside: ramblers, bikers and horseback riders can follow the bridleway from the site as far as the 100-mile-long South Downs Way, or pick up one of the many walking or cycling trails that crisscross the area around the site. Orchard Cottage is also well-placed for horse racing and motorsports events as the Goodwood Estate is less than 10 minutes from the site – time your stay right and you might be lucky enough to get a trackside seat at the Goodwood Revival, Festival of Speed or Glorious Goodwood. Relax in peace back on site, with nothing to disturb the quiet except for bird calls. When you’re feeling peckish, get that barbecue lit and load it up with goodies from the supermarket 10 minutes away, then tuck in next to the campfire and let your eyes drift skyward – this is a dark sky reserve, so a spot of stargazing is an absolute must. Fancy a bit of a treat? There are oodles of restaurants to try within 15 minutes of Orchard Cottage.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Plenty of space, not too busy and perfect location for Goodwood.

Disliked: Toilets and shower were mixed men & women with no women specific facilities. Wasn't that clear whether water was drinking water.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice open field, lots of flat patches you could choose from. Good location - not far away to explore South Downs, Chichester, Arundel etc. Lovely quiet field, clear skies and enjoyable to eat your breakfast watching the sheep in the next field.

Disliked: Facilities are poor, three toilets and one shower, no washing up facility - you could use the sinks in the toilet block but they have only cold water. The taps claim ‘drinking water’ yet run very cloudy, looks almost like milk when you’re filling up any water container. Shower worked ok, but in general the toilet block was very unclean (we showered with our flip flops on to avoid the floor). Wouldn’t have minded so much if we’d paid £10/£15 a night, but at £30 a night we felt ripped off. When we got there we were the only ones there, no sign of an owner or anybody on site so we picked a spot and hoped it was ok! Didn’t see the owner at any point in our stay which was a shame as we would have liked to buy some wood and had a fire. As a campsite it is basic and does the job, but very overpriced for the facilities.

If this was £15 a night it would be 5 stars.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Rural setting, rustic and natural feel to the place without being overcomplicated and a nice owner who stopped for a chat.

Disliked: The price! £30 a night for dirty bathrooms (floor was filthy though toilets were clean), no electricity at pitches and no other facilities.

Local attractions

Goodwood Estate is an absolute must-visit and a prime spot for starting your explorations of West Sussex. It may be famous for racing, but Goodwood’s no slouch in other departments either – call in to Goodwood House for a guided tour and afternoon tea, play a round on one of the golf courses, or wander over to the aerodrome for a lesson or a sightseeing tour from the air. If Goodwood House has got you keen on stately piles, there’s no shortage nearby with the spectacular Petworth House, Arundel Castle, Uppark House and Parham House all within half an hour. History buffs may also be drawn to Bignor Roman Villa, Petworth Cottage Museum, Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre and Coultershaw Heritage Site, 15 minutes down the road. Grownups might want to add stops at Upperton Vineyards and Stopham Vineyard and Winery to their list, but there’s plenty to do around here with the kids too: start 10 minutes away with the Weald and Downland Living Museum (taking you through the lives of 1,000 years of Sussex dwellers), then travel on to Fishers Farm Adventure Park or, if you just want a laid-back day, the coast and Climping beach around 20 minutes from Orchard Cottage.
