  • Simple pop-up site next to the Medway river in East Peckham
  • Leeds Castle, Bewl Water and Go Ape course within a half-hour drive
  • Launch paddleboards or canoes from the site; fishing on request
Paddleboarding, canoeing or fishing part of your plans for your outdoor break? A pitch at Riverside Camping and Caravans should suit you rather well – this Kent site is right on the banks of the Medway river, with fishing by arrangement and direct access to the river (from a wooden jetty) for the watersports folk to launch their craft. Even if you’re not planning any river-based antics, this family-run site makes a lovely spot to hang out in for a while – you might like to follow the Medway Valley Walk instead, or even just chill out on site looking out over the water with a picnic. You’ll be allowed to light barbecues or firepits too, with kindling available on site (but please note campfires must be kept off the ground in a firepit). The location on the edge of the village of East Peckham is a very handy one too – from the pitches you can easily walk to plenty of local facilities including convenience stores, a deli, a café/wine bar, a couple of takeaways/restaurants and a brewery shop. There are several country pubs in local villages too, and more shopping and eating options in Maidstone or Tonbridge (about 15 minutes’ drive away). It’s a simple setup at this pop-up site, with just portable toilets on the facilities front; staff in the site office are happy to help out with local info and tips on things to see/do and places to eat as well.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Quick and easy to book, fair price and it had the cleanest portable loo we’ve ever seen.

Disliked: The campsite was near a busy road and so the sound from the traffic was off putting and made it difficult to sleep. Obviously this is out of the campsite staff’s control and we should have checked the location before making the booking.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: What a lovely little site, right on the river, perfect for launching paddleboards / kayaks. Flat field and well maintained. Run by a nice welcoming family. The freshest smelling portaloo I've ever used. We will be back with our paddleboards, see you soon. Sally and Sarah (S&S)

Local attractions

You won’t have to travel far to start finding places to visit – for starters, The Hop Farm is about a mile away for animal encounters, an adventure play area and a kids’ driving circuit, or you could try the teapot collection and lovely café at Teapot Island (both about five minutes’ drive). You can also follow local footpaths, including the Medway Valley Walk that runs alongside the river all the way to Tonbridge, or find more trails in places like Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (half an hour). There's also a Go Ape adventure course at Bedgebury, or you can try out various watersports and bounce across the inflatable aqua park at Bewl Water (25 minutes). On a grander scale, visit medieval Tonbridge Castle (20 minutes’ drive) or plan to spend a full day exploring Leeds Castle (25 minutes), riding the miniature train, playing miniature golf, watching falconry displays and spending time at the castle-themed play area. If you’ve not got kids to entertain, perhaps the lovely Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (half an hour) might be more your style.
