Views of elham valley

  • Scenic location in the Elham valley, seven miles from Canterbury
  • In the North Downs, a 12-mile drive from the Channel Tunnel
  • Easy access to the M20 and the A2
Ever been to the Elham valley? It's a right pretty part of the North Downs, made up of a chalk valley and set between Folkestone and Canterbury: the 22.5-mile Elham Valley Way is right pretty and right recommended too. If you're seeking a stay around these parts (also recommended, to put up tired feet), have a look at Goldpark Leisure right in the valley and surrounded by the striking scenery for which the valley is renowned. It's about seven miles from Folkestone and Canterbury and under 10 from Dover's white cliffs, or you could go on further adventures as it's also only 12 miles from the Channel Tunnel… The site has an amenities building with a toilet and shower room also suitable for disabled guests, a washing-up area and a reception with helpful info on the local area. Leave the car behind once you get here: the bus stop outside the Goldpark Leisure gate has services to take adventurers to both the Kent settlements nearby. If you do want to drive, there's easy access from the site to the M20 and the A2.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: After setting up and having a meal we decided to have a early night. The next day while having breakfast we were approached by a guy with a very boisterous little dog who introduced himself as the site supervisor. A lovely guy could not have been more helpful. The rest of our week was spent watching the comings and goings of the various residents, all friendly and courteous. While there are no scenic views, the site is as clean as can be expected with the washroom block working as needed with lots of non-adjustable hot water in the showers. We would not go back but that’s due more to the location, we had basically made a mistake and should have been looking further west, all said and done, we had a good week.

Disliked: Don't go by first impressions, the site is not as advertised, it is a commercial site with semi permanent residence. Still, quite, except for the busy road which runs along side the site. No wi-fi.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: You can come and go as you please. Didn't have to check in.

Disliked: The campsite was super basic. There wasn't any pitch layouts. We felt on edge as all the campers seemed to be in the middle surrounded by permanent residents. The shower facilities were extremely basic and outdated.

Local attractions

The chalk downlands of the Elham valley are the suggested starting point for hikes around the area; if you're feeling energetic, make it your mission to do the whole 22.5-mile route of the Elham Valley Way, starting at Hythe and finishing, like certain pilgrims, at Canterbury Cathedral. Rest up when you arrive then investigate the cathedral further: Canterbury's most famed landmark is the oldest cathedral in England and is of course where Chaucer's lot amused themselves in quarantine by telling many tales. The Canterbury Tales is an award-winning attraction in the city (yes, yes, as well as a book); after that, wander around the shops and pubs before an evening in one of Canterbury's restaurants. And then perhaps another pub… Also have a wander around the 90 acres of ancient parkland of nearby Howletts Zoo Park, where animals to see include lions, tigers, rhinos and elephants.
