  • Peaceful site surrounded by lakes, on the edge of the New Forest
  • Bookable activities including high ropes, climbing and abseiling
  • Play area, table tennis, café and shop; toilet blocks with hot showers
Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre and Campsite set in 65 acres in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of forest adventures. Among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here (which must be booked in advance and are subject to availability), you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes.... Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a play area and free wifi. (Table tennis and kid-sized bouldering walls are around too if you really can't help yourself...) The several amenities blocks are well equipped with a toilet block with hot showers, a baby-changing room and washing-up facilities. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – maybe see how fast you can run there and back...?

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (pet friendly, forest)

Liked: The gorgeous grounds, how peaceful the site was, the range of activities they offered. They allowed fires & BBQs (raised off the ground) which is lovely to have! The facilities where the cleanest I've seen at any campsite that offers activities. I specifically went to review this site for families that might need to have one/both parents do a bit of work online while there and the wifi held up very well in most areas of the campsite, which was great to see.

Disliked: Nothing about the site was bad, only thing I would say is the website to book the activities is a little hard to navigate.

Primitive grass campsite (lake view, no pets)

Liked: loved all of the facilities such as toilets in the night, the public campfire and the atmosphere. Always friendly people on the campsite whenever we go!

Disliked: I disliked the varied times for the cafe nearby. They told us that "times may vary" in actual reality they close for entire days and there is no telling when this is until on the day. We were told by reception that it would be open and that day it was not open. moral of the story is don't rely on it being open but use it when it is. we have had good food there before.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite (pet friendly, woodland)

Liked: Was plenty of walks nearby and the washing /toilet facilities were very clean.

Disliked: The washing up facilities were unclean and blocked. We were sent to a pitch (S4) which we couldn't use because of the rain we wouldn't be able to get in or get off. There were much nicer pitches the other side of the house so I would ask for them on the next visit as I assume the price would have been the same.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (pet friendly, forest)

Liked: The size of the pitch was massive! Very quiet. We were next to a shelter and fire pit which we had use of as we came early in the season and were the only campers near it. Staff were so friendly! Facilities were clean and bins and areas were always tidy.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite (pet friendly, woodland)

Liked: Clean facilities. Friendly staff when anout

Disliked: Someone was on our pitch when we arrived after 1 . They should have moved at 11am . Because of this we were guided onto another pitch and as it was through a muddy section we got stuck in it for 3 hours . They towed us out but if our pitch had been checked we would not have lost a fair chunk of our day and it was stressful

Local attractions

Several bike tracks start directly from the site, so pack a picnic and head off into the New Forest to find your own adventure – perhaps you might fancy a pedal to the Dorset and Hampshire beaches of Christchurch, Mideford, Southbourne or Highcliffe...? The sands of Bournemouth are about 10 miles away. Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood. Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
