  • Pop-up site next to the River Esk in the Upper Eskdale valley
  • Access to hill walking and wild swimming spots in the Lake District
  • Five minutes’ drive to West Lakes Adventure for organised activities
Park up at a hill farm home to purebred Herdwick sheep, set right alongside the clear-water pools of the River Esk, during a stay at Dalegarth Campsite in Cumbria. This spacious park has lots of room for spreading out to soak up the Upper Eskdale valley views and a food tent serving up bacon butties and hot tea until late morning. During the rest of the day, handmade stone-baked pizzas and hand-fried fish ‘n’ chips are available to order. This sort of sustenance is definitely needed after days strolling in the surrounds – Eskdale has some of the Lake District’s most spectacular scenery, so walking boots are very much required when meandering around the mighty waterfalls and hills. The site’s owners also reckon some of the national park’s best wild swimming spots are close by, including the well-known Trough Bridge a few minutes’ walk away. Jumping in the water from here not high-octane enough for the thrill-seeking types you’re travelling with? Take adrenaline-seekers to West Lakes Adventure up the valley (five minutes) for activities like kayaking, canyoning and climbing.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Lovely campsite with lots of space. Hot showers and clean portaloos. Right next to a river which is fantastic for swimming/paddling in. A short walk to two nice pubs serving excellent food. Very freindly staff providing logs to buy for the fire pits.

Disliked: Showers are far away if you stay in one of the other fields. Would be great if they had another couple in the next field where the toilets are situated.

Liked: Beautiful peaceful location run by wonderful helpful people full of hints on how to make your stay more in joyable. Love the idea of the food hut on site with good prices not trying to rip you off, the showers are both hot and powerful with a view of the sounding treeswhile you shower. There's a river that runs along one side of the site that looks ideal for a dip if the river isn't in spate kids will love it. Nice and quiet we slept very well on this site.

Disliked: Not to keen on the porta loos but they did the job.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked: Dalegarth Campsite, nestled near a wildly flowing mountain river close to Scafell Pike and Wastwater, is a gem for those seeking both adventure and tranquillity. The location is superb, offering excellent access to three charming pubs and nearby waterfalls, perfect for unwinding after a day on the fells. While the meadow can be a touch swampy, this minor inconvenience is easily overshadowed by the site's overall charm. The facilities, including a toilet and shower, are perfectly adequate. As a base for hiking England’s highest summits Dalegarth Campsite is worthy to keep in mind.

From the manager: Hi I’m sorry you didn’t like my little site. I know there was an issue with one of the loos that you pointed out to me and I rectified immediately hoping I wouldn’t get a scathing review! Whilst we are very basic we certainly are not dirty as the adjacent reviews point out. We are labelled as a pop-up site on here so maybe suggest you avoid such sites in the future if you prefer more advanced facilities….

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Everything, quiet, spacious, basic facilities, nestled right on the banks of the river esk with excellent swimming within walking distance, great base for a day or three in the hills.Eskdale valley is a stunning location and you can still find solitude without looking to hard. Beats the tourist traps by miles and well worth the scenic drive in if your coming from the Central lakes.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked: The perfect level of amenities to feel dependent on what you have with you but still feel like you're in nature. We stayed in early July at the same time as the local mini festival EskFest, and even then it was still quiet in the site. The sound of the river and the nearby sheep were all you could hear in the evening. The pizza's were delicious, the warm showers were a welcome treat, and everything felt very hygienic. The site is in a beautiful opening, sheltered from the road by enough trees that you're not bothered by the sound of any cars. The owners were responsive and very kind and welcoming.

Disliked: There's not anywhere within reasonable walking distance to pick up groceries of any kind. This isn't actually a failure of the campsite at all, if anything it's what makes it so wonderful. Just a heads up to make sure you come with everything you'd need, as you should be doing if you're going camping.
