Liked: The site was kept nice and staff were friendly and helpful, especially with taking the time to talk to my little boy.

Disliked: The toilets seemed quite out dates making them feel dirty. Also there was only one sink to wash up at, and that wasn’t clean.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: Friendly warden ,large gravel all service pitches.

Disliked: Toilet block is outdated and down steep steps. No good for the disabled. Part of the site is rubble strewn but has now been taken over by another company so hopefully in the future there will be lots of improvements. Being in a foreign made motorhome, I would have preferred to have driven on the pitch forwards so the amenities are on the same side as my van but I was asked to reverse on the pitch. No dog walk.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Fab location, peaceful, friendly helpful warden

Disliked: I wonder when campsites will charge less for solo traveller? Why should single charge be same as double? Unfair. £30 for one person, with rather simple “facilities” seems expensive, outside school holidays too. Maybe one day folk will pay extra for yappy dogs

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Gordon the warden, he was so helpful, friendly, nothing was too much trouble. He made of point of chatting to all campers making sure they had everything they needed, knew where the shops etc were. Such a lovely friendly gentleman. Also the site itself was beautiful , peaceful, spread out so you didn’t feel squashed in. Beautiful surroundings. Felt very calm and peaceful. Liked that there were a variety of pitch sizes and camping options available.

Disliked: Not so much disliked but needs more amenities. 1 shower, 2 toilets and 1 sink between what I estimated to be approx 15 females is not enough. I didn’t really dislike anything and even the 1 shower,2 toilets won’t put me off from going back to high hermitage.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite

Liked: The most flat and level pitch I think I have ever stayed on! We were met by Gordon who showed us to our pitch and explained where everything was, lovely welcome from him. Its quite a basic site, but everything works as it should and was clean. The site was nice and quiet and worked for us from a location point of view as we were doing a tour of the north east.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: The site itself is currently being improved, which is evident the grass tent pitches are near the toilets and shower blocks which is handy. The site is minimal, but peaceful and the site caretaker, Gordon, is a lovely guy, an assett to the site, full of knowledge of the local area and extremely helpful and can see he works hard managing and tending to the site alone.

Disliked: Although they done what they needed, the toilets and showers are a little dated, but useable and there is only one male and female shower, can imagine, in busier times it being a pain trying to use shower.

Local attractions

The nearby town of Prudhoe, about 11 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Norman castle and a waterpark as well as access to the old Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now the Tyne Valley Line and still running regularly between the two cities. If you're anywhere around this part of England, a must-see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, the most visited destination in the north of England, running for about 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, across the North Pennines, and along Northumberland National Park. The wall has several Roman sites along its length, including Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain; eight forts and live excavations at the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum. Paintball, quad biking, go karting, offroad 4x4 driving and a Go Ape! are all available locally. A shopping centre is 20 minutes away.
