Hedging around the caravan site

  • Small family-run caravan site at a North Yorkshire golf course
  • York city centre 15 minutes' drive; designer shopping outlet 10 mins
  • Restaurant, woodland walks and several golf options on site
Woodland walks on one side, a golf course on the other, and a cosy restaurant serving up tasty meals to get you through whatever activity you’ve chosen for that day – now doesn’t that sound just a little bit fabulous? This is the setup on offer at Swallow Hall, a small family-run caravan site in the North Yorkshire countryside a couple of miles from the village of Wheldrake and six miles from the centre of York. This place is something of a dream for golfing types – in fact the caravan site is inside the grounds of Swallow Hall Golf Course, which has a pay-and-play 18-hole facility that doesn’t require any tee time booking. Guests also have the option of playing on the 9-hole Academy course (par 28), honing their skills at the short game area or extending the day with some time on the floodlit driving range. Meanwhile, non-golfers have direct access to Forestry Commission woodland walks, or may prefer to get out for a day of retail therapy at the Designer Outlet York, 10 minutes’ drive away. Whichever one of these you fancy, you can get set up for the day at The Roost restaurant on site, which is open for breakfasts, lunches, drinks and sweet treats throughout the day (closed Monday and Tuesday, and not open evenings). It’s a popular place so booking a table is recommended if possible. Wheldrake has a pub and a small shop for your other sustenance needs. Pitches have access to an eco-friendly modern toilet and shower block; please note that only eco-friendly biodegradable toilet fluid can be used on site.

Liked: Absolutely fabulous site, great new toilet block and showers, picture perfect outlook and fantastic dog walking straight from the site. We then visited Pool bridge farm for open water swimming and paddleboarding which is located just 2 mins drive away. This was an amazing place to stay and it was my 50th birthday celebration and Melissa very kindly extended our leaving time to 1500 on sunday which we were very grateful for - thank you so much!

Liked: We had a lovely stay. Nice and clean site with a really great woodland walk next to it. All electricity included and very easy to check in as no one was there you just turned up and plugged in. Close proximity to York and the York Designer Outlet. There is a chip shop 5 minutes drive away also but only takes cash which was quite annoying. Didnt get chance to try the restaurant but the menu looked great. There is a washing up room which was great and nice and clean.

Disliked: These are only minor points which would be nice to have, 1) there are no lights spread around the campsite. This would be good to have especially as a woman walking across the campsite on my own to the toilet block. I had a torch so it was ok but it would be nice to have some additional lighting. 2) the showers were nice and clean and lovely and warm however the cubicle kept getting flooded from the shower tray. It could maybe do with a raised wooden mat or something to stand on instead of wet floor to get changed. 3) the grass had been cut and all the loose grass was left on the pitches so when it got a bit wet it stuck to you and went all in the caravan/awning. Cutting the grass and taking away the cuttings would be ideal. Our aqua roll was covered in grass! 4) not a very good signal there. 5) self check in which is also a good point but sometimes it is nice to have a friendly greeting. These points wouldnt stop me staying again however as we had a lovely time.

Liked: Lovely and quiet site. We got an excellent sleep. The toilet block is lovely and clean and modern. Nice woodland walk and golf course on site and restaurant which we didn't use as its only for breakfast and lunch. Big pitches too The site is quite close to the designer outlet for the park and ride to York.

Liked: Grounds are amazing. Spacious pitches, grass cut really short, surrounding woodland. Toilet and shower facilities were excellent and done to a high specification. 20 min drive into York so not too far.

Disliked: Hospitality was awful. Beyond poor. A lady was sarcastic, blunt, and knew exactly how to ruin a visit within minutes of arrival. Don’t believe me, try it. Be prepared so you are not as shocked as I was. If you can handle being spoken to like a naughty 5 year old, then this place will be great. Be careful booking in for a meal on site, the locals / regulars get priority seating. You may be told there is no room if you have booked through pitch up. Normally when you are paying customer, people that run camp sites engage in conversation and are always happy to help. That’s why we go camping. This does not apply here. Love to hear anyone else’s experiences.

Liked: The whole layout o the site was wonderful big spacious pitches and not at all overlooked. Lovely golf clubhouse to eat in. The most friendliest of people at the site who were so helpful with organising taxis into York. Shower block was immaculate. Definitely will be returning.

Liked: Great site. Clean modern bathroom facilities quiet with birds singing and very little traffic noise. We like it as it is just a short drive to the designer outlets park and ride so we leave the camper there and catch the cheap reliable bus into York much better than driving in and expensive parking!!! No dish washing facilities yet but plenty of hot water so take a washing up bowl and take the bowl of water back to your camper. I highly recommend this site 👍🏻👍🏻

Disliked: Nothing really. A dish washing area would be an idea as would stop lazy people washing their dishes in the bathroom sinks.

Liked: Excellent facilities, clean showers toilets etc, warm welcome from the owner, if you like golf then this a great spot as you are allowed to use the course and you also get a discount if you are using the site, didn’t get to use the bar or restaurant at the club house but food smelt really good and the staff were also warm and welcoming and helpful.

Disliked: A little out the way with no nearby public transport that you can walk too and every taxi firm wanted £20 plus to take us to York so we drove our camper an to the park and ride which cost us £5:50 return for two.
