  • Yorkshire Wolds site in the old walled gardens of Thorpe Hall
  • A 15-minute drive from Bridlington and 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Coarse fishing lake and five-acre playing field
Set within the old kitchen garden walls of a country estate, Thorpe Hall Caravan and Camping Site is a quiet, peaceful and sheltered location to relax and unwind. The family-friendly (and dog-friendly) site is less than a mile from the small Yorkshire village of Rudston. Bring kit for a day at the coarse fishing lake or gather chums for games on the five-acre playing field (ideally cricket, in keeping with your traditional English surrounds, but anything goes really…). If you're after things to do locally, then a quick explore of Rudston (including a stop at the Rudston Monolith, the tallest standing stone in the United Kingdom) should top the list, before driving off to the coast at Bridlington,15 minutes away, for sandy beaches and sea-view strolls. And so to your digs… in the estate’s pretty walled garden, with plenty of space and shelter and access to a smart heated bathroom block that’s got disabled access and hot water available all day and all night. The small shop sells essentials such as milk and bread (and is a handy fount of local information too), and supermarkets in Bridlington are handily close by for all your barbecue bits.

Liked: The site is spotless. Well kept grass. The dog/playing field is great and well maintained. The forest walk is great for dogs and a walk into the village. The wardens are very friendly and can’t do enough for anyone on the site. The pitches are of a great size. Will be going back.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and rating. We're happy to hear that you liked the site but sorry to read that you had an issue with neighbouring pets. We so wished you'd have come to talk to us about it as it's in our booking terms and conditions that dogs must not be allowed to bark constantly. We could have had a word with the guests in question which may have solved the issue for you. We're sad to learn that you'd not come back or recommend us to friends but wish you all the best for your future touring adventures :-)

Liked: Quiet, peaceful site with spacious flat pitches, sheltered within walled garden setting.

Disliked: Unfortunately as other reviews have stated, the owners are rather overbearing. Pitches are marked but you must park specifically as they tell you or like us you will be made to move even a metre! As we pitched our awning we saw them making another couple literally take down their tent and move it. After returning from a day out with hungry tired children we got out of our van and the owner ran over to tell us our awning did not comply with their terms and conditions as it does not have a piece of material to actually attach it to our van and we must take it down or leave. After reasoning with them they agreed if we could cobble something together to bridge the 5 cm gap from awning to van we could stay. We are regular campers and are always respectful of sites but honestly it was ridiculous and so over the top. We saw them telling 2 others the same. It felt like they were patrolling looking for infringements of the rules and really put us off. Many other campers expressing the same and probably the reason the site was half empty in August school holidays. A shame as the site is nice but honestly not worth the hassle.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and rating. Thankfully there are many different types of sites to choose from that cater to all tastes and requirements. Sadly we didn’t meet your needs but wish you Happy Touring for your future adventures. We shall go on to address your dislikes but first we’d like to take the opportunity to encourage all guests to read our terms and conditions ‘prior’ to making a booking along with the subsequent correspondence which will contain all the information you require for an enjoyable stay. We, the managers (not owners) are disappointed by your dislikes as you had ticked to say that you agreed with our terms and conditions when making your booking via PitchUp. Furthermore, we are very transparent in our own correspondence (sent to all guests) which state no gazebos/kitchen/toilet/day shelters or tents permitted unless an additional pitch is booked for them. Within the email you are also invited to contact us should you not agree with the T&C’s for any reason or if you have any questions about your booking. As we cannot be onsite 24/7, the email also let you know that you’d need to pitch up as directed (as per the large diagram/guidance on the arrivals board) or you’d be asked to move (this is to comply with our site licence requirements, fire regulations and for the safety and wellbeing of all of our guests) When you made contact by phone you made no mention of set up or having a day shelter but instead asked to move pitch and luckily for you, being only 74% occupied we were happy to oblige and offer you a different pitch. On visiting the site later in the afternoon I popped over to welcome you and to ask if everything was alright with the new pitch. I commented on your campervan as it was the same make and model as our own and asked respectfully if you could just move it over to be in line with the number (as per the set up diagram/guidance) and thought we had a warm and friendly chat. The next day we noticed that you had erected a day shelter on your pitch (as mentioned in our correspondence with you, is not permitted). We have a consistent and fair approach with all customers and on visiting your pitch I did explain this. I’m not sure I was ‘reasoned’ with but we agreed on a compromise. Again, in my opinion I felt that both parties ‘you and I’ were friendly, respectful and amicable and that the score of 1 and the term ‘overbearing’ to be unjust. I can assure you that there is no pleasure in chatting with guests who, for whatever reason seem unaware of the T&C's. However, as managers we have a duty of care to our customers and to ensure we operate in a way that satisfies the local council, the fire department and Health and Safety guidance.

Liked: Family & dog friendly site, great amenities (showers etc.), really friendly warden (nothing’s too much trouble)with some nice walks in the area plus a large playing field for the kids

Disliked: WiFi & TV signal very patchy on the pitch we were on but you can buy a co-ax cable to plug into the site’s aerial if you haven’t got one yourself.

Liked: Site and amenities nice and clean and accessible, Managers lovely, friendly and helpful. Fishing pond good, caught plenty of fish. Lovely area. Pitch good size and easy to hook up to electric.

Disliked: Very Noisy at times, mainly on an evening, we like to go to sleep quite early and 11pm cut off point for noise didn't really benefit us due to this. Seemed to be quite a lot of children running around which is not for us either, personal preference that we prefer a much quieter site, therefore not likely to return during school holidays.

From the manager: Thank you for your review and rating and glad to read that you found the site to be friendly and clean...oh and that you enjoyed some great fishing :-) We're sad to hear that the site was too noisy for you before 11am but we fully understand that we all look/require different things from a campsite. We'd love to be able to welcome you back so if you're ever in the area outside of the holidays we hope you'll consider giving us another try. In the meantime...Happy Touring...and fishing!

Local attractions

Can’t get enough of these grand stately homes? There are plenty more options nearby to swan around in… Burton Agnes Hall is a 10-minute drive from base, Sewerby Hall and Sledmere Estate are within 20 minutes, and Burton Constable Hall (and its Capability Brown-designed grounds) is 45 minutes away. Perhaps the most famed, though, is the exquisite Castle Howard (45 minutes) – it’s starred on TV several times, playing the role of Brideshead (in Brideshead Revisited, twice) and Kensington Palace (in Victoria). Steer away from the country piles with a trip to York, a little over an hour away, to meet vikings at the Jorvik Viking Centre, cruise along the river or take a sweet trip into the past at York’s Chocolate Story. Or perhaps head to Hull (50 minutes) for more museum action and sealife encounters with more than 3,500 fish that live at The Deep aquarium. Swap both city and country for coast with a trip to Scarborough (35 minutes) for days on one (or two, or three…) of the beaches, a splash at the waterpark or peaceful ambles in the gardens. Filey (20 minutes) has another fine beach, and a clifftop golf course with cracking coastal views.
