  • Peaceful, adults-only Norfolk site half an hour’s drive from Thetford
  • Richmond Park Golf Club next door; Sandringham 45 minutes’ drive
  • Fully stocked fishing lake; wildlife haven; dog-friendly; local walks
Hot tub, fishing pond and dog-friendly accommodation at a wildlife haven sound pretty good? Time to make your way to Wispy Meadows in Norfolk, a peaceful waterside spot where an adults-only shepherd’s hut awaits. At this rural hideaway – just half an hour’s drive from Thetford – you may well share your outdoor space with kingfishers, woodpeckers, herons and deer. Hand-built on site, the shepherd’s hut is luxuriously decorated inside and out. Kept toasty warm by gas central heating, it has a kitchen corner equipped with everything you need – from a gas hob to crockery and cutlery – for rustling up camping meals; you can stock up on food at the shop in Watton village (five minutes’ drive). A cosy living space has storage for all your gear and a widescreen TV for chilled evenings curled up in front of the multi-fuel stove. There’s another TV by the comfy king-size bed (all linens and towels are provided) for lazy morning starts, and the roster of amenities also includes an ensuite with basin and walk-in shower. Outside, you can take long soaks in the private hot tub, or lounge around on your deck with seating, a barbecue, gas firepit and pretty views over the pond while anglers fish for carp, tench, roach, rudd or pike.

Local attractions

Stretch your legs (and those of any accompanying dogs) on local strolls in Wayland Wood (five minutes’ drive), on The Great Eastern Pingo Trail (15 minutes) following a former railway line, or amid the vast leafy expanse of Thetford Forest (also 15 minutes). Alternatively, combine your hike with sporting action and play a round at Richmond Park Golf Club (five minutes’ walk). Spend the day seeing how the other half live in the museums and ornate chapel of Sandringham Estate (45 minutes), where you can also explore 400 acres of parkland. Ingest more grandeur with a tour of lavish rooms and alfresco sculpture trails at Houghton Hall and Gardens (40 minutes), built for Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole in the 1720s. Hit a rainy day? Make for the entertaining Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford (half an hour), celebrating the antics of the much-loved TV series, and have a spin through local history at the Ancient House Museum, housed in a crooked half-timbered cottage with all manner of eccentric artefacts displayed in period rooms.
