  • Symonds Yat 15 minutes’ drive; Gloucester Cathedral 35 minutes
  • Wildlife haven with a well-equipped kitchen and proper double bed
Romantic getaway anyone? Tucked into woodland on the edge of Gloucestershire’s Forest of Dean, Badger Barn Retreat really is a couples’ retreat from the pressures of everyday life. Peering out between lush greenery and mature hedgerows, this stylishly boho hideaway is accessed by a labyrinth of paths lined with stone circles. The hand-built cabin is a well-insulated and cosy space, suitable for whatever the English summer throws at you, with a proper double bed and heaps of feather pillows. Cooking facilities include an induction hob, electric kettle and tabletop oven, with washing-up facilities outside, and a hot shower and flushing loo a few steps away. More than 1,000 trees have been planted around the cabin in the last two decades, and you are free to wander in the wildflower meadows, orchard, nut wood, organic vegetable garden and a sunken garden. If you’re particularly quiet going about your business on site, you may spot deer flitting among the trees or grazing in front of the cabin. And wherever you go on site, look out for frogs, dragonflies, owls, rabbits, shrews, buzzards, peregrine falcons and a whole lot more.

Cabin

Liked: The Badger Barn Retreat really felt like a retreat as it’s private and secluded. We loved the privacy of our own garden, bathroom and shower facilities. The hut had a comfortable ready-made bed, a sofa, many cosy blankets and pillows. There’s an area to cook and make coffee-tea, a dinner table inside and outside too. We loved the hammock and the pretty gardens. We are planning on staying again as it was a perfect getaway. The location is good too as it’s close to many outdoor adventure places. Our favourite day out was to Puzzlewood Forest. Would love to revisit in the winter and use the cosy fire!

Liked: What a fantastic hut! We stayed in the Badger Barn Hut. There’s a hammock and it’s much larger than the pictures make it look. Lovely hideaway for a couple. Quiet, private, peaceful.

Disliked: Nothing!
