  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and showers. There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked: We love the ease of beltonville, not restricted to a patch of grass. Great facilities cleaned regularly and even accidentally joined their beer festival.

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked: Large cafe on site, usually open from breakfast until 5pm. The site was crowded for the bank holiday weekend so they opened an extra field with its own portaloos - we appreciated the extra space. Staff were all very friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Relatively level pitches throughout.

Disliked: Hadn't realised the campsite was running a beer festival (many would consider this a bonus!) so the campsite was extra busy, some evening noise from the music and the cafe closed early - no afternoon food available unless you paid to enter the beer festival. Next time we know to check their website for scheduled events!

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked: They have cafe (good to have breakfast). They also hosted beer festival over weekend, so was great entertainment for adults and kids. View is nice too. Was reasonably quiet. Close to walks.

Disliked: Just a little crowded. Not much space between the tents, could do with the playground for kids. WiFi was dreadful.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Cafe on site.

Disliked: We were really disappointed as when we booked for the bank holiday weekend we were not informed that there was going to be a beer festival on all weekend, meaning that the campsite was overcrowded and the rules regarding noise were broken by the site themselves. We were made to pay an extra £10 if we wanted to pitch up an awning alongside our camper van, however due to the site being overcrowded the only pitches left for us and our friends meant there wasn’t enough room for our awning to be put up. We booked for two nights but only ended up staying the one.

Primitive grass tent campsite (four person)

Liked: The surroundings are really pretty, the coffee shop is nice and affordable, well located

Disliked: A lot of noisy campers who kept us up until 3 am for the three nights we were there. We talked to the manager so he would do something about it but it didn’t seem like he did. They said they check the area at night and tell people to be quiet if they are making noise which we never saw happening. The female toilets were leaking and got very muddy. Often there was no toilet paper.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
