  • Small family-run site on a working farm, six miles from Newport
  • Free admission to Dyfed Shire Horse Farm
  • Café, nature trail and indoor and outdoor play areas
All ages – and the dog – will be kept delightedly busy on fab little Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at the foot of the Preseli Mountains on a site run by the Lewis family since 1849. As you might have gathered from the site name, shire horses live here – meeting them and visiting the farm for free is included in your pitch price. The farm is also part of a small visitor attraction, where you can take your pick from horse-drawn carriage rides, tractor rides, bird of prey displays in summer, and stacks to do for small sorts including a roomy play area adjacent to the site, and a spacious and well-equipped indoor soft play area open daily in the summer holidays. A one-kilometre and dog-friendly nature trail runs through woodland and meadow. Dyfed Shire is on a working farm in a secluded and safe paddock in west Wales, six miles from the coastal path and beaches of Newport and Poppit Sands. It has a farm café (next to the outdoor play area) serving hot and cold food, a well-stocked shop and ice pack freezing. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed. Toilets and showers are a short walk from the camping field, and include a parent and baby washroom.

Liked: We were met by owner Hue who showed is to the best pitch as it was raining and the fields were very wet. My 13yr old grandson loved his stay there, visiting the horses and donkeys when he wanted and went on the tours proved by the farm, staff were very good at answering his questions, would recommend it for a stay especially if you like shire horses

Disliked: There was nothing to dislike except the weather

Power optional grass site

Liked: The people who ran the farm were very approachable and the Cawl in the restaurant was good.

Disliked: However the quality of the site was unfortunately dreadful. We could not get the caravan onto the touring field because it was so wet. I understand that the site has no control over the weather however because it is a working farm it was extremely wet and muddy everywhere. We ended up leaving our caravan on the car park for our stay. The "facilities" for the campers - if you can call them that were absolutely dreadful. There were about 8-12 pitches however there was only one shower and one toilet which were in the same unit so if someone needed the toilet when somebody else was having a shower they'd be stuffed. The shower room was cold and incredibly basic with no working heating and it was obvious it was not regularly cleaned as it was very dirty with huge cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. There were two other sinks but they ran cold water and were predominantly for hand washing only after stroking the animals. Luckily we have a shower and a toilet in our caravan which we used as I refused to use the dirty shower room, but there were other smaller motor vans on the site which would have had to use them. Part of the attraction of staying here was that it was a working farm but as a farm presumably trying to diversify into camping unfortunately they have not succeeded. We were so fed up in the end that we came home a day early.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. Unfortunately I will have to disagree with some of the concerns raised. It's a pity you decided to comment as a KBW rather than approach us first. I am puzzled by the comment we are "very approachable" which confirms you could have raised your concerns with us prior to departing, but then rate our customer service as 4/10 which is a complete contradiction which questions the rest of your review and begs the question what you would need for a 10/10 review. We welcome constructive criticism but we have to challenge comments which we feel are incorrect, which in your case appears to be borne out of the fact the weather was so poor. You comment we have 8-12 pitches which is incorrect and appears to be a figure plucked out of thin air. Nearly all arrivals pre Easter were contacted pre arrival to make it clear the weather was very poor and that we would be happy to defer arrival until better weather, which a number took advantage of. On arrival you would been told that the field was very wet and that an alternative hard standing option was available which you took advantage of, therefore you never went onto the campsite is my recollection. I have to observe that you booked a caravan holiday in Wales in March and and especially wet one at that. I am somewhat surprised that your comments appear to show surprise at how wet a Welsh farm is at the end of an exceptionally wet winter when claiming it was "wet & muddy" everywhere as if we could control such events! However, we are very happy we have live in an exceptional location but clearly the views of the Preseli Hills is not for you, unlike the vast majority of visitors. There are 2 toilet/showers and 2 more toilets in the café area, therefore to claim guests needing a toilet would be "stuffed" if someone was using a shower is false. You describe the showers as "basic" but we are happy they are functional and are cleaned/checked on a regular basis. If you had raised any concern we would have dealt with it at the time. I am also puzzled you saw fit to grade the farm poorly for being child friendly when you state you were a "mature couple." We had families staying who appeared happy, did you speak to them? I have a feeling you did not. The campsite had been in operation over 10 years, therefore to say our efforts at diversification has failed is incorrect. Clearly we are not for you and that is fine but you speak for yourself and not the camping industry or fellow campers. We wish you well in your future camping ventures but suggest you check the weather forecast before leaving home as it appears wet weather is not for you and maybe consider staying on sites with higher facilities and much higher pitch fees as a result as working farms clearly are not what you seem to think they are.

Power optional grass site

Liked: Really lovely location. Good amenities close to the pitches. Plenty of things to keep the kids occupied, so I could relax. The indoor play area was good on the soggy days.

Disliked: Because if the wet weather driving on and off the campsite got pretty muddy. Could do with a stone road way through the top camping field.

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind review and we look forward to seeing you on the farm again. We pride ourselves on providing a friendly and value for money attraction. The weather has been a challenge for us this year but overall given how wet the weather has been we feel we have done as well as could be expected and having only the gateway slightly muddy feels like a victory to us now the season is coming towards the end.

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to review and we look forward to you returning to stay with us. Our toilets/showers are functional rather than "high end" but on the flip side we feel we offer excellent value for money having kept our pitch prices the same for the past 2 years, which includes free entry to Dyfed Shires. We are delighted you feel that there was plenty of activities and space for your children to enjoy.

Liked: A small site with huge character: kid’s entertainment ✅ spacious, flat, electric pitches ✅ beautiful friendly animals and handlers ✅ basic yet decent hygiene facilities ✅ amenities nearby

Disliked: Very Minor niggles that didn’t affect the stay

From the manager: Thanks for your review and we hope to see you again on our site/farm. We appreciate the positive comments about the nature of our pitches. Despite the poor summer weather we have worked hard to avoid pitches turning from grass to muddy brown and we feel on this we have succeeded. We are delighted you enjoyed our animals and our friendly animal handlers. Your comment about our facilities is honest and accurate. We are more than happy to be sent an email over any "niggles" and would do our best to resolve or explain.

Local attractions

This is a stunning part of west Wales, with beaches and coastal walks, castles, ancient forts and family attractions all easy to get to. Less than a mile from the farm in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the Iron Age archaeological site of Castell Henllys with its Celtic roundhouses and regular events. Even the most iron-willed history resister should be stoked with a day here, where kids can hear ancient tales of the Pembrokeshire people, train as warriors, take the history trail or take part in some of the 80+ activities arranged here each year. Beach days are a must around here too: if you feel up for it, you can hike six miles from the farm to reach the coastal path at Newport, part of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path running for 186 miles from Amroth to St. Dogmaels around this part of Wales shoreline. Family days at Folly Farm, Pembroke Castle, Tenby and Caldey Island are all within 30 miles of the farm.
