  • Adults-only site with llamas, alpacas, horses and Shetland ponies
  • A five-minute drive from fishing lakes
  • A 15-minute drive to Bridgewater and 45 minutes to Glastonbury
Come and meet the alpacas and llamas on this splendid spot in Somerset. Two miles outside the village of Cannington by the River Parrett, Manor Farm Caravan Park extends a warm welcome to visitors. And it doesn't need even to do that, because the resident herds of llamas and alpacas welcome guests perfectly well by themselves: they're a woolly and sociable bunch who'll make you feel at home on this small farm site with views towards the Quantock Hills (horses and Shetland ponies are on site to meet to if you're moree of an equine enthusiast). This is a simple and quiet spot, popular with people who want peace and nature and not a lot getting in the way. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but as it's a working farm the proprietors ask that canine friends be supervised at all times. There are no set out pitches and you can pick from three fields to pitch up on; barbecues are allowed on all. However much you enjoy the quiet, it's nice to know the site is 10 minutes' drive from a welcoming pub with food and a good selection of ales. Before or after a trip to said hostelry in Cannington, make a trek up to Cynuit hill fort for views of the Quantocks; some say it was the site of a massive battle between Saxons and Vikings, but all you'll hear these days are the birds... Similar levels of inner peace can be found five minutes' drive from the site at Trinity Waters: five lakes full of diverse fish forming an angler's dream. If you want to try your luck on the Parrett, head half an hour to Langport where the local club welcomes day fishers with permits. The site has portable toilets and a washing-up area.

Local attractions

The Quantock Hills are wild but compact: heaths, moors and cliffs covering an area 12 miles by four; there are paths for hikers and bikers all across and around them, many finishing up with a paddle in the sea. The Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) is similarly well supplied with paths through a coastal wetland landscape, full of curlews and oystercatchers among the wildflowers. Heading further up the coast, Brean Down (an hour’s drive) is a natural pier jutting into the sea, where the fort at the end makes a fine stopping and picnicking point. Watch out for wild goats and falcons on the way there and then see if you can spy the Directional Concrete Arrow, one of dozens placed around Britain during World War II to help bomber crews navigate. Brean beach is a peaceful spot, but if you’re into bigger seaside stuff, the Victorian resort of Weston-super-Mare is 45 minutes from the site. To make the trip to Minehead in style, take the West Somerset Railway from Bishop’s Lydeard (half an hour) for a 20-mile steam ride through fine surrounds. For history more ancient, as well as town centre strolls and walks up to the Tor, travel 45 minutes to Glastonbury.
