General

  • Peaceful adults-only site in Somerset with llamas and herd of alpacas
  • A five-minute drive from fishing lakes
  • A 15-minute drive to Bridgewater and 45 minutes to Glastonbury

Come and meet the alpacas and llamas on this splendid spot in Somerset.

Two miles outside the village of Cannington by the River Parrett, Manor Farm Caravan Park extends a warm welcome to visitors. And it doesn't need even to, because the resident herds of llamas and alpacas do that perfectly well by themselves, a woolly and sociable bunch who'll make you feel at home on this small farm site with views towards the Quantock Hills.

This is a simple spot, popular with people who want peace and nature and not a lot getting in the way. Barbecues are allowed and well-behaved dogs are welcome, but as it's a working farm the proprietors ask that canine friends be supervised at all times. There are no set out pitches and you can pick from three fields to pitch up on.

However much you enjoy the quiet, it's a comfort to know you're 10 minutes' drive from a welcoming pub with grub. Before or after a trip to said hostelry in Cannington, make a trek up to Cynuit hill fort for views of the Quantocks; some say it was the site of a massive battle between Saxons and Vikings, but all you'll hear these days are the birds...

Similar levels of inner peace can be found five minutes' drive from the site at Trinity Waters: five lakes full of diverse fish forming an angler's dream. If you want to try your luck on the Parrett, head half an hour to Langport where the local club welcomes day fishers with permits.

The site has portable toilets and a washing-up area.

This really is a jewel for those - like us- who prefer a small, quiet site with real atmosphere.
There is loads of space with alpacas, llamas and a pony.
They have a small static van which has been converted into a small ‘shop’ with honesty box, leaflets, maps, books, DVDs.
It has a small toilet and shower which would be good for those in a small campervan.
Pam the owner is lovely and friendly.
Seats and tables liberally disowned around the site.
We will be back, but I will void the very narrow road from the south next time - should have read the instructions!

We stayed here for two night with our dog. The place was amazing, the Alpaca's and Llama's roaming about by your tent were great.

The owner was very friendly and was very accommodating. We ran out of gas on our last evening and they were very kind and let us borrow theirs for the final evening.

It was quiet and peaceful throughout our stay and would definitely go back again.

There was a portaloo available and they were installing a shower whilst we were there.

A very personable experience, nice owner Pam, made to feel welcome. Pitch was flat and turf excellent for pegs. Cheap, basic and very enjoyable. Worth every penny. There is a glamping bell tent on site, had a look in it, lush double and pleasant environment. Well worth looking at for a booking.

Local attractions

The Quantock Hills are wild but compact: heaths, moors and cliffs covering an area 12 miles by four; there are paths for hikers and bikers all across and around them, many finishing up with a paddle in the sea. The Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) is similarly well supplied with paths through a coastal wetland landscape, full of curlews and oystercatchers among the wildflowers.

Heading further up the coast, Brean Down (an hour’s drive) is a natural pier jutting into the sea, where the fort at the end makes a fine stopping and picnicking point. Watch out for wild goats and falcons on the way there and then see if you can spy the Directional Concrete Arrow, one of dozens placed around Britain during World War II to help bomber crews navigate.

Brean beach is a peaceful spot, but if you’re into bigger seaside stuff, the Victorian resort of Weston-super-Mare is 45 minutes from the site. To make the trip to Minehead in style, take the West Somerset Railway from Bishop’s Lydeard (half an hour) for a 20-mile steam ride through fine surrounds. For history more ancient, as well as town centre strolls and walks up to the Tor, travel 45 minutes to Glastonbury.

Must see

  • Clarks Village (12.3 miles)
  • Glastonbury Abbey (13.2 miles)
  • Glastonbury Tor (14.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Fyne Court (5.8 miles)
  • Coleridge Cottage (5.9 miles)
