Strap yourself in for a smashingly active Slovenian sojourn at Camp Gabrje, which lies on the left bank of the Soča river in the serene Soča valley. The site acts as the region's headquarters for paragliding and hang-gliding excursions around the Soča valley, and the section of river that runs through the area provides all the right conditions for fab fishing and gnarly whitewater adventures aboard rafts, in kayaks and atop hydrospeed boards. Gabrje lies well away from traffic and busy roads and is hugged snugly by the Julian Alps, giving you everything you could ever need for a brill break away from the doldrums of the day to day; for outdoor types there are maps and information leaflets galore at reception (open daily between 8am and 11pm) that detail the biking and hiking trails and climbing routes that lie nearby, plus absolutely heaps of outdoorsy excursions organised by the site's friendly and expert staff. The local fishing association manages over 145 kilometres of waterways in the area, and you can buy fishing permits on site so that you can lob your line out straight away from any of the numerous good fishing spots that lie along the riverbank. As you might expect by now, there's absolutely heaps for kids to do on site: apart from the fact that the Gabrje is set among one ginormous natural playground made up of waterways, mountains and alpine woodlands, kids will be plenty entertained by the site's swings, trampoline, slackline rope, sand box and basketball court. Camp Gabrje has its own bar in the reception area, which serves heaps of drinks (both soft and boozey) and snacks such as fresh juices, coffees, pizzas and ice creams. Handily, staff are up for giving you a free lift from Tolmin bus station to Camp Gabrje if they're free when you call. For a nominal fee you can also arrange lifts to and from the train station at Most na Soči, a little further afield, or to and from nearby airports. You can also be ferried around the area during your stay (again, a reasonable charge applies), or alternatively you can avail of the site's free bike rental service for scenic bike rides or speedy shop runs into Tolmin.

With fishing and paragliding permits available right on site, the outdoor adventure bar has been set pretty high for guests coming to Camp Gabrje. Thrill seeking tourists also agree that the wild and fast rapids of the Soča river are among the most popular of Europe's waterways for the likes of rafting, kayaking, and hydrospeeding. The section of the Soča that runs alongside Camp Gabrje provides exactly the right conditions for all these pursuits: rafters can head over to the village of Trnovo ob Soči, on the right bank of the Soča River; kayakers can convene at the section of river that runs between the Soča Otona pool and Kobarid; hydrospeeding hedonists will find their home in the Kobarid Gorge; and whitewater newbs can practice safely among the calm waters that flow over the gravel sections that lie between Kobarid and Tolmin. Canyoning is good around here too – you'll have a whale of a time exploring handsome gorges, waterfalls and pools using a combination of techniques that include walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling and swimming under the guidance of experienced local guides along the Pršjak river towards Pršjak Waterfall. There are absolutely heaps of walking and cycling trails that lead straight from the site and network the area; old army roads and walking trails utilised during World Wars I and II take you along the valley's lakes and rivers to waterfalls and gorges – all you need to do is choose which direction you want to head in.
