How well set you are here. It's a paltry five minutes' drive from Wintersun Caravan and Tourist Park on Western Australia's Coral Coast to Carnarvon, the Mid West Gascoyne town at the mouth of the Gascoyne river on the Indian Ocean. From here, the vast and spectacular Shark Bay World Heritage Site lies just south of town, and you'll also be niftily placed for the likes of fishing at One Mile Jetty, kitesurfing at Pelican Point, and beaches galore. Wintersun is surrounded too by the Ningaloo Reef Marine Park, part of another UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ningaloo Coast. There's a friendly and laidback vibe here, leading to events and activities making up an extensive social events programme such as communal dinners, pancake breakfasts and film nights. A giant film screen is in the recreation room for goggleboxing in the evenings. Outdoors are acres of grass to wander, an exercise area so dogs can wander too, and a big playground on sand for the kids to let off steam at. You could also have a leisurely afternoon on the bowling green, or take long dips in the outdoor pool. Next to the pool is the Wintersun outdoor kitchen and barbecue area (pick up supplies at the Gascoyne growers' market five kilometres away): a few tinnies should hit the spot around here too...

Lokale seværdigheder

For a mighty famed landmark, see if you can spot the giant satellite of the Big Dish, on Brown's Range a couple of kilometres from Wintersun (hint: it's quite large). This vast dish was the first earth station in all of Oz, used for communications for the Apollo Moon programme and for tracking Halley's Comet. The building itself isn't open to the public, but the dish is well worth a visit for the views of Carnarvon and the surrounding plantations from its site, and for a wander around the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, opened by astronaut Buzz Aldrin in 2012. More actively, a seven-kilometre drive will take you to the pretty pier of One Mile Jetty (also in the site pics, do have a peek), for tailor and mulloway fishing, wanders along its 1,493-kilometre length and then a ride back on the Coffee Pot Train. Sticking around into the evening for a spectacular sunset over the water is highly recommended around here too. Also recommended around Carnarvon and this part of Mid West Gascoyne are the four-wheel drive tours of the Kennedy Range and Mount Augustus National Park; swimming with humpback whales in Coral Bay; wildlife watching and boating in the UNESCO site of Ningaloo Coast, and helicopter rides over the Kennedy Range, national park or the southern end of Ningaloo Reef.
