  • Dog-friendly site on a permaculture farm in the White Mountains
  • Lake Tarleton State Park 25 minutes’ drive; Hanover 45 minutes
  • Outdoor kitchen and solar shower; weekend farm-to-table meals
Calling all green-fingered folk, keen hikers, skiers and fans of the outdoors (and their dog) – if there ever was a spot to please all of the above, The Hummingbird Center is it. Located on a working permaculture farm in Dorchester, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, this dog-friendly site has direct access to local mountain biking, Nordic skiing and hiking trails. As such, it is a place that's got something different to offer in all four seasons. The good folks at the Hummingbird Center like to demonstrate sustainable technologies such as photovoltaics, solar water heating, wood-fired cooking, earthen construction and composting toilets. As you might expect from an organic farm, the facilities have a green touch, and they include solar-powered showers, an outdoor kitchen, outhouses and indoor toilets and showers. The Nourish restaurant sells farm-to-table meals on weekends, which use food and herbs grown on site. With several local hikes, swimming holes and ski slopes in the vicinity, outdoorsy pursuits are full steam ahead here. The site’s trail network also connects to the Green Woodland trail, which has miles of trail riding. As for shops, dining and entertainment, head to Plymouth, 25 minutes’ drive away.

From the manager: Thanks for coming Russel, it was nice to host you. Please reach out to us next time with any questions as to where the fire pit is and where the trash is located. Our fire pit is gigantic and worth checking out, i am sorry you missed it. Also, there is an extensive recycling , composting and waste management system on the property. We will be glad to show you where these things are next time you visit! Warm regards, Dunstan

Platform non-electric tent pitch

Liked: My boyfriend and I stayed at D Acres farm on night. It was a remote location. We arrived on motorcycles and camped overnight on one of the platforms. The farm was very unique from anything we were used to. Self sustaining with lush grounds with all sorts of flowers, grapes, all types of herbs, fruit, plants but also quite interesting and impressive. Very peaceful grounds with lots of art sculptures,. Lots of mountain biking trails and hiking trails, a very interesting fire pit area, and shared Indoor common area/ kitchen . It was a great experience with Love, peace and happiness toward all

Disliked: Only stayed one night and didn't get to explore or utilize the grounds as much as I would like.

Local attractions

Hiking is an excellent way to explore the spectacular landscape of the region. Head to the Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead (10 minutes’ drive) for a four-kilometre track with scenic valley and stream views; or have a go at the nine-kilometre Three Ponds Trail (25 minutes), which winds past a lake and waterfalls. If you want to spend hot summer days in the water, head to Lake Tarleton State Park (25 minutes), a popular spot for canoeing, fishing or just swimming. There are hiking trails in the surrounding forested hills, and you might also want to keep an eye out for wildlife such as moose and ospreys. Hanover (45 minutes) is known for Dartmouth College, an Ivy League institution. The university campus includes a pleasant green and the Hood Museum of Art, with a sizeable collection of indigenous Australian works. Across the Connecticut River, in neighbouring Vermont, the Montshire Museum of Science has child-friendly hands-on displays.
